Makes me sad when people stop maintaining personal websites for the reason that AI will scrape it. Bad people might visit it but that wasn't reason to stop. Make great stuff and share it. Killing your site hurts people more that it hurts AI, and keeping it benefits people more than it benefits AI.

Bluesky has just welcomed & verified ICE. Yes, you can (and should) block @icegov.bsky.social … …but also think about the violent dangerous hatred the ICE account will spread to those who don't block it, and the consequent radicalisation. Time to consider Fediverse/Mastodon! #Trump #ICE #Fascism

ceding AI to the right is a generational poltical mistake and bullying LLM researchers off bluesky to cook their brains in twitter racism is a self defeating and foolish act from well meaning people deluding themselves into thinking intentional ignorance is a valid form of critique and resistance

John is tongue in cheek, but there's a statistic in Laura Bates new book that 90% of deep fakes made are of women, and if you don't process the implications of that and come out demanding regulation I'm not sure you're reachable.

One of my favorite things is getting to tell friends who are new to NYC that the subway "stand clear of the closing doors please" voice is a trans woman named Bernie Wagenblast and she's amazing.

I don’t mind the idea of AI doing my dishes because that’s the stuff I want to be disrupted. But it doesn’t have to look human to do this! Look at our little roombas. They do a good little job, and should they turn evil, and it would be hard for them to punch us in the face.

At #fronteers #DarkMode, @utilitybend.com proposed the <rangegroup> HTML Element. It unlocks the multi-handle range slider, a pattern you might have already seen when picking a price-range. Feedback Form (with links to the explainer and demos): docs.google.com/forms/u/0/d/...

De man is unhinged.

part of my resentment towards LLMs is to do with them crowding out anything else we could be talking about. there are so many things I could be reading to get better at my craft but I'm presented with "you should actually get worse at it on purpose because nothing matters any more"

💡 CSS Tip! Do you know that you can use offset() to place images around a circle? And if you combine it with the new sibling-*() functions, you can have a perfect placement that works for any number of elements! css-tip.com/images-circle/

The thing I want most for tech is for engineers to stop gushing about *what* they used, and to start asking "but is it *good*?"
3MB of JS, plus another 400K of assets to display a logo, an image, and 1.4KB of text is definitional web development malpractice, but none of the many (many!) tools involved in sharting out this site kept the experience from falling into the gutter. This isn't "an SPA", it's barely an effing webpage. But it has React, Tailwind, and a hundred horrors embedded in a 3MB JS payload that *must* load, else none of the static text displays.

So much of the US coverage of the German elections is cast in a "sky is falling" AfD rising apocalypse frame. I get it. The AfD is going to 2x its vote and get around 20%. But another way to look at this is that the AfD blew it. The conditions couldn't be better for the AfD to surge and yet. 1/ 🧵

At its heart, Star Trek is a utopian fantasy about a society so advanced that they are capable of holding productive meetings that last no longer than three minutes
A TNG scene. We're in the Enterprise conference room, where Picard is holding a meeting with Data, Troi, and Dr Crusher. Barclay is also there, for unknown reasons. Maybe he wandered into the meeting and just sat down, and everyone was too polite to mention it. That happened to me once. I was visiting an office location I didn't normally go to and I wasn't quite sure which conference room I was supposed to be in. I walked into one and sat down and it took me five minutes to realize I was in the wrong meeting. From the perspective of the people in that room, halfway through that meeting, a stranger walked in, sat next to the boss, took notes for five minutes, then walked out without saying a word.
