Atlantic Association of Universities just released their first peek at 2026-27 enrolments. International student numbers are down collectively by 18%. That's a $60 million hit to the region's universities - 2x the new money they recieved from governments in the last round of provincial budgets.

The utter, utter stupidity … Cratering our higher education sector, with regional areas hit hardest, to pander to One Nation immigration politics. They pegged uni finances on intl students, and then started attacking the student visa intake.

No, but really, outsourcing our own moral discernment to the talking word toaster is not reasonable or ultimately positive for humans so it’s okay. It is a machine. There’s no mortality to it being used as a machine. You don’t remote lock a guy for cussing out his tractor. What are we doing here?

^^ That article too credulously accepts the faux-flattening of "AI" into a single technology, as if bicycle and jet planes are the same thing because they're both "transport" It is continuously and intensely frustrating how successful this industry tactic has been, despite how easy it is to refute

Yes every woman has been harassed, many assaulted. But every woman has also experienced invisible loss from moments she avoided harassment. She felt a space becoming unsafe, so she left, while men stayed on. And in leaving, she lost: opportunities, experiences, learning, promotions, even simply fun.

This is a great insight from a young woman in Canberra on housing and time and multiculturalism www.abc.net.au/news/2026-09...
The woman who feels priced out of spare time

Rosie* is in her 30s and lives in Canberra. She captured the point vividly.

"Housing gets covered as deposits, rates, supply. Living it, the real cost is time. You work the hours the housing demands, in the suburb the housing pushed you to, and what gets sacrificed is the ability to sit down with the people around you.

"Multiculturalism worked in this country when people had time to spend with people unlike themselves. Not policy time — ordinary time. Backyards, front steps, sport, the shops, someone's kitchen. That's how a stranger stops being a category and becomes a neighbour.

"We have spent 30 years pricing that time out of people's lives and now we're surprised that cohesion is fraying and asking what went wrong with our values.

"When people are exhausted and stretched and never in the same room, difference stops being interesting and starts being threatening. That's not a failure of tolerance. It's a failure of time. That's what I'd want people in power to understand."

Australia nicely demonstrates the way far-right parties end up pulling the strings on centrists goblins Centrists see surging support for drooling racists, and then try to mildly mimic their positions and policies. Centrists don't get a surge in poll support though; that all stays with the racists
