in 1627 someone published a text called 'Woe to Drunkards' with an honest to goodness Chad knight vs. Virgin fop meme
"In a woodcut on the title-page of 'Woe to Drunkards,' a sermon preached by Samuel Ward, of Ipswich, 1627, the vices of that age are typically contrasted with the virtues of a former one. In the upper compartment we are shown what men were of old by the open Bible, the foot in the stirrup, and the hand grasping the lance; while in the lower, the degeneracy of their descendants is typified by the leg and foot, decorated with a broad silk garter and a large rosette; by cards and dice, and a hand holding at the same time a lighted pipe and a drinking cup with a cockatrice in it. Twenty years afterwards, these types would have been more strictly applicable, with the inscriptions merely transposed."

Trying an adaptation of @zugenia.bsky.social's "Where Do You Know From" exercise for my 1st year writing class. Original assignment here: www.maifeminism.com/where-do-you... (full text of my assignment in ALT text if you want to steal it!)
Worksheet: Where are you coming from?
We’ll take a few minutes to think and then a few more minutes to write answers to a couple of these questions. Use full sentences.
1.	What are your intellectual interests? That is, what are you so curious about that you read, watch, research, practice, or talk to learn more? Your answer might be a particular question or field of study, but it could also be about related to your relationships, hobbies, or sports.

2.	How did you get interested in these ideas? Given only a few minutes, how would you tell the story of you starting to care about these questions? (Did it start with your family? With something you read or saw? A teacher or coach? Something else?)

3.	How have these interests changed your life? (Have you traveled to competitions all over the state? Picked a major to follow your interests? Filled your room with movie posters? Learned to cook Korean food?)

4.	How do you want your college experience to help you pursue the ideas that matter the most to you? (It could be through classes, through clubs, through competitions or performances, through the friends you make, the opportunities you take up, or something else entirely.)

A seventeenth-century engraving of a woman (Margaret Cavendish) with long curly hair and a long gown sitting at a desk, with paper, a pen, and a bell on the tabletop. She wears a small crown in her hair, and is surrounded by little nekkid babies who prepare to lower a laurel crown onto her head. In the foreground is a poem reading (regularized):

Studious she is and all alone
Most visitants, when she has none,
Her library on which she looks,
It is her head, her thoughts her books.
Scorning dead ashes without fire
For her own flames do her inspire.
