Reading the press about Jev and TypeSafe AI and it's wild to see ppl seemingly re-discovering what folks like @timnitgebru.blacksky.app have been saying this whole time. Yes, ML models should be well-scoped, structured, & testable! Being context-appropriate is, in fact, the most important thing!
A screenshot of text that reads: Large language models (LLMs) are designed to produce text for humans to read. When you need a model to make a judgment that your code will consume, that creates a mismatch: you are coercing a text-generation system into outputting structured decisions, then parsing the results back into something your code can depend on.A screenshot that reads: "My experience is that Sutton’s bitter lesson is the tip of an iceberg of bitterer lessons: beyond compute and algorithms, there’s data and even picking the right task to do ML on." Below that is an image of a pink pyramid with four different vertical layers, which read top-to-bottom "algorithms", "compute", "data", and "doing the right task". Below that is the text: "The bitterest lesson in ML is that doing the right task > data > compute > algorithms."

1) Thank you, Karin. I’m happy that both the 1998 and 2026 DNA tests results jibe with the historical evidence compiled in my first book. I also think the historical information alone should be enough. But I know the world we live in & why DNA was brought into the picture.

It’s no accident that the blogosphere took off after 9/11/01 and the wars that followed. Not only had the tech arrived but people’s experiences and expertise were so fragmented and underrepresented in most media that they needed an outlet to spill over. Gloria Steinem taught America that sexism is a symptom of a system that can be changed.

From the fight for equal pay to abortion access and political representation, she showed that progress comes when people organize, build power and refuse to accept inequality as inevitable.

She staged protests, established domestic violence shelters, created a magazine owned and operated entirely by women and helped build a movement that fundamentally changed this country.

Her legacy is the millions of people she inspired to believe that a more just world was possible.

She lived in New York for 70 years. We were lucky to have her. We mourn her loss and will carry her work forward.

The city of Tempe, Arizona, says it is ending its Flock program
Tempe, AZ - The City of Tempe has turned off its Flock automated license plate reader (ALPR) system and will end its contract with the company. The cameras are no longer collecting license plate data and will be removed by Flock. The City will not seek another company to replace the system.
While the cameras have been a useful tool for Tempe Police, helping officers solve crimes, recent cases involving the misuse of automated license plate reader systems in Arizona and nationwide have raised concerns about the risks that come with the technology.Tempe Police has found no misuse of its own Flock system. The department audits its searches each month, and no improper use has been identified.
"These cameras have helped our police officers do their jobs, and we don't discount that," said Tempe Mayor Corey Woods. "But the risk of misuse is too great. We have to be able to provide public safety in a way that maintains the trust of our community. For Tempe, that means taking these cameras down."
"Any law enforcement tool used by the City must not pose a risk of infringing on residents' civil liberties," said Tempe Councilmember Bobby Nichols. "We have a responsibility to ensure that these technolo- gies are only employed if they present a narrowly tailored solution to a compelling government interest. I'm grateful to the City staff for this quick action and responsiveness to constituents' concerns."Residents may continue to see Flock cameras in Tempe until the company removes its equipment. Data previously collected by the system is stored for 30 days and then automatically deleted unless it is connected to an ongoing case or investigation. In those cases, the data may be retained as needed for the investigation. No new license plate data is being collected now that the system has been turned off.
Ending the use of the Flock system will change how Tempe Police approaches some investigations. Officers will continue to use other investigative tools and law enforcement partnerships to prevent crime, solve cases and respond when the community needs
them. The decision follows steps Tempe took earlier this month in response to community concerns. On Aug. 10, the City stopped sharing its Flock data with other law enforcement agencies. Tempe Police also launched a public Transparency Portal so residents could see how the system was being used. The portal will be discontinued now that the Flock system has been turned off.
The City of Tempe remains fully committed to both community safety and transparency. Residents can continue to track Tempe's public safety performance through the City's Strategic Management Performance Measures.
