Same argument was made about smartphones (“expensive, elitist, not accessible to most of the world”). Now most of the world has smartphones. Why? Economies of scale and learning curves. You have to start with the easy part of the adoption curve before you can reach the hard part of adoption curve.

I think we need a "PDS as a Service". There are a bunch of little apps I'd love to make, but I don't want to have to host a PDS for each of them for anyone who doesn't already have an account. But I'd be fine with allowing them to register to a PDS with my app's domain and pay a fee per sign up.

There are many things being built on atproto. Many of them won’t get adopted or thrive. And yes, many are built without user research. It’s OK? Don’t use things you don’t want to. Promote things you like. And build something yourself if you feel like it. Do it the way YOU want it to be.
