A thing I learned about Meta when I was trying to understand how their statements relate to their actions a few years ago is that *they just tell absolutely indefensible lies* and journalists almost always let them. They believed no one would ever punish them for it in any way that matters.

There's a sort of meta-point here, which is that, to be recognized as an "expert" in most institutional/social contexts, you have to adhere to an orthodoxy controlled by extremists. The industry is absolutely captured by people with no attachment to reality. That's a relatively new phenomenon.

I don't think it's more complicated than everybody wanting AI doomer stories because they sell well right now. There's a cohort of people using the thing, so there are scary stories. Kind of like when AirTags were new, there were lots of scary stories.

So there's a sort of survivorship bias. There are still lots of "jobs", but they go to the people who are still alive & in the job market after the last cohort gets gutted. The artists whose work is being taken without consent to train models are not being taught & hired to make designs using LLMs.

Yeah, the thing about this framing is *who* gets put out of work. It's not as if we retrain people, or compensate people when their careers get destroyed. Uber broke the law, ruined the value of labor for a class of workers, captured the economics of a market, and called the victims "entrepreneurs".

I think there are normies whose exposure to it is entirely through the Meta media ecosystem, and it's not substantially different to them than how they encountered Oculus glasses or whatever. Not a *huge* audience, but not zero.
