I literally laughed out loud when I read this line because it just sounds like something a very corporatised Sisyphus would say
But the industrywide growth of generative A.I., and the resulting building spree of giant data centers that use exponentially more electricity, is making such net-zero goals slip out of reach. Many A.I. data centers are powered by natural gas generators, and some even plan to use nuclear reactors to supply electricity.

Google now says its net-zero ambition “remains a continuous, uphill pursuit” because of the rapid growth of its infrastructure.

Even if future A.I. data centers become more energy efficient, said Professor Lee, it is no longer feasible to supply all of their electricity from renewable sources such as solar and wind power.

“The numbers are just too big,” he said.

Energy ambition
24/7 carbon-free energy—a moonshot we always knew would stretch the limits of what’s possible—remains a North Star for our operational energy strategy.
It enables us to think holistically about grid solutions and ensures our strategies actively drive the technology, transaction, and policy innovations needed
to realize a round-the-clock carbon-free future for everyone. While we’ve made meaningful progress, the rapid growth of our infrastructure—coupled with
persistent external headwinds—means that this ambition remains a continuous, uphill pursuit. Nevertheless, we’re proud of what we have accomplished,
and our focus remains on our ultimate objective: the systemic decarbonization of the grids that support our global operations while strengthening the
stability and long-term affordability of the worldwide energy systems that we all share.sisyphus pushing a boulder up a hill

There are people who care deeply about delivering good government services working on figuring out what to do next, but you should know that this is happening. You should know how this administration is trying to make it harder for you to access the services and information to which you're entitled.

I'm keenly following Turso's VDBE work, in the hopes that we see a non-SQL relational database built on their "LLVM for databases". If they can provide a highly reliable foundation, we might see more innovation in the database frontend. turso.tech/blog/a-new-m...

Turso is becoming the LLVM of databases: one modern, reliable Rust core with many SQL frontends. After rewriting SQLite, we are now building Postgres.

I like this idea and the phrase for it: Practitioner Voice. This article itself reads a little too Thought Leader (derogatory) for my taste, and I worry that the definition emphasizes style more than it should. But it seems like a valuable concept to name. martinfowler.com/articles/pra...

Also feels quite bad to have slightly contributed to a problem that I am very aware of and try to push back against!
.. The reason that this worries me is
that this isn't really what I'd call a
"planning chortle". It's the creation of a
chortle where there was no actual
planning problem to exaggerate or
mischaracterise. And I think this is
potentially pointing to a real cultural
problem in the infrastructure industry
(and potentially the construction
industry more widely) — the idea that
public consultation is intrinsically
frivolous and illegitimate, and that
getting the permission of people
affected by what you're building is
basically girly swot stuff that Real Men
O' Engineering shouldn't have to be
troubled by.

Discarded. My cartoon in today's @theageaustralia.bsky.social
A political cartoon by Megan Herbert showing a suited male bureaucrat sitting at a drawing board, with his back to us and a red pen in hand. In front of him is a document titled "Idea for a plan to stop gendered violence #3745". As he ponders the corrections he is going to make to the latest attempt at addressing what should be a national emergency, he tosses a scrunched up piece of paper, marked with red pen corrections (another failed attempt) over his shoulder towards a wastepaper basket which is full to overflowing with other such attempts. Closer inspection of the discarded pages shows that the crumpled and crushed paper balls closely resemble the bodies of women and girls, the victims of Australia's epidemic of male-perpetrated domestic violence which has claimed the lives of another four women in girls just in the last week.
