As an expert on sexual violence, I have to add that these ethical violations are a nightmare for interviews on sensitive subjects. I would never recommend ANY survivor goes public with their story at an outlet that would do this to them.

I can’t imagine any off the record remarks were removed from the audio recording before it was shared—including before it was potentially uploaded into an AI service.

While digging around their website, I found their ethics policy—including a section on AI-generated content. I suspect that’s a part of what happened here. And I’m upset about that too! I did NOT speak to a journalist with the assumption that my interview would be funneled into producing AI slop.

As an update for anyone who isn’t digging through the comments: I found more articles by USA Today journalists I’ve never met. There are THREE that used quotes from my interview recording—including many quotes that were never publicly published anywhere else.

Ironically, my original interview with the journalist I spoke with was primarily about how "inconsistencies" can come from gender bias in investigatory processes and then be blamed on survivors. It was the inspiration for this thread--but none of these points made it into any USA Today article:

I'm the token expert voice saying that inconsistencies in victim's narratives are common in an otherwise brutally bad piece of journalism full of tropes about how not to report on sexual assault.

And that led to my words appearing in a victim-blaming article written by a journalist I have never met about how Jane Doe's story was "inconsistent."

Earlier this week, I agreed to interviews with two USA Today journalists. They wrote fantastic articles about the Cornell case that I'm proud to have been a part of. What I did not know is that their employer considers interviews to proprietary and opens up recordings to be used by any journalist.

Nicole is a leading expert on the issue of campus sexual violence. I am floored that USA Today would do this to her. I find this kind of journalistic behavior unethical and morally reprehensible, twisting an interview with a renowned advocate for survivors into a hit piece against a survivor.

Women and teen girls are afraid to run outside at night. They are taught to walk with keys in between their fingers and carry pepper spray or alarms. They can't just assume a man will want to be a friend or a mentor. They can't wear short skirts. They can't drink too much. And they can't be angry.

Women and girls get harassed and assaulted everywhere. Many women and girls are constantly taught any mistreatment is their fault. Many women are taught not to expect accountability, talking to police can deter victims, and rape kits can go untested for years: www.endthebacklog.org#explore-the-...

Women have to go out into the world and be around other people. There is no clear way for women to do all the right things and avoid harassment or assault. It doesn't matter if they wore different clothes or avoided alcohol. It happens with intimate partners, family members, teachers, and friends.

I see people victim-blame and try to logic-out the Cornell 7 rape case. "Why would she go into the frat house? Why would she drink?" etc. It's easier than thinking about how many men have done similar things to women, and whether men *they personally know* have harassed or assaulted women.

A woman existing (in public or private) is not an invitation to assault her, period. Ion care if she walked in there naked or in a nun's habit, that has no weight on where she ought to be assaulted. Bc when you ask those questions, you are saying ppl who do those things ought to be assaulted.

Every single newspaper that reported that Jane Doe “changed her story” should be rushing to publish retractions right now. This case should be a lesson in taking a DA’s victim-blaming statements at face value. Victims do not report to the police because they thought nothing happened to them.
