It's a good thing leading a campaign to dehumanise a minority and strip them of their rights doesn't put people at risk, or this guy would be a massive hypocrite. #TransRightsAreHumanRights
EXCLUSIVE: J.K. Rowling‘s agent Neil Blair has claimed that a trans rights protest at the gala performance of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child put people at risk.

NEW The diabolical defending of Manchester City Understanding an aggressive litigation strategy By me, at @prospectmagazine.co.uk (Prospect paywall is down currently.) www.prospectmagazine.co.uk/ideas/law/th... #MCFC
What can explain such an aggressive and counterproductive approach? To an extent the answer may be in the facts and the evidence. Perhaps the view was that the only chance of getting out of this was to be unhelpful as well as robust. In respect of an earlier dispute with Uefa, an internal communication at the club apparently said “Uefa doesn't respond to anything other than aggression”. Maybe the view was taken that this would work here too. Maybe the club still thinks it will work in the end, with the league being pushed into settlement on appeal or at the doors of the High Court.

But this does not offer a total explanation. What may work with Uefa may not work with other adversaries. The structure of the league’s investigation and the disciplinary approach meant that aggression would not only be unhelpful, but would count heavily against the club. An appeal on the law or procedure at the High Court in this sort of case only has a remote chance of success. It can be assumed the club was warned of all this.

There is a phrase in football punditry that “the defending is diabolical”. Here diabolical is, of course, a synonym for dreadful. But in its more literal sense, diabolical means bedevilled with wrongful purpose. And the strategy adopted by Manchester City in contesting this matter is also in this sense diabolical. The club will have known that it was unlikely to work, and that it would make things harder, but the club decided to do it anyway.

Another excellent read from Russell Jones

Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 September 2026
Format: Hardcover
I have enjoyed Russell Jones' writing for many years: from his satirical tweets, to his full-length books about the Tories, and then to his fiction thrillers.

I was fortunate to be chosen as an advance copy reader for his latest book: The Wolf that Chews Rocks. It is a tale of the life Russell now leads: caretaker to Baxter, a dog with zero sense of self-preservation.

Throughout the book I laughed, I grimaced, I winced, I laughed some more. Interspersed between each tale of the latest thing Baxter did to cause embarrassment and another hefty bill are lessons about dogs in general. About how wolves became domesticated, why they are reactive to sudden movements, and why they are so fascinated with fox poop.

I hope Russell takes this as the compliment I mean this as: his writing style puts me very much in mind of the late great Douglas Adams.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

NEW Why holding a placard is a terrorist act, while causing disruption in a balaclava is not The mess caused by ministers and the police not taking terrorism law seriously By me at @prospectmagazine.co.uk www.prospectmagazine.co.uk/ideas/law/th...

Recent events in England now reveal the practical difference between terrorists and protesters. It would seem that terrorists peacefully hold placards and get immediately arrested, while protesters wear black uniforms and balaclavas and disrupt infrastructure and do not get arrested.

How did we get into this mess? How have we placed ourselves in the position where terrorism legislation is used to detain and prosecute peaceful protesters, while those adopting the terror tactics of private armies seem to be free to do as they wish?

The reason is that for some time British politicians have not taken terrorism legislation seriously, and that ministers have got into the habit of misusing terror laws for easy targets.
