It was on a dreary night of November that I beheld the accomplishment of my toils. With an anxiety that
almost amounted to agony, I collected the instruments of life around me, that I might infuse a spark of
being into the lifeless thing that lay at my feet. It was already one in the morning; the rain pattered
dismally against the panes, and my candle was nearly burnt out, when, by the glimmer of the half-
extinguished light, I saw the dull yellow eye of the creature open; it breathed hard, and a convulsive

4-panel SMBC comic update. Two women are sat at a desk, discussing philosophy books. The first woman, dressed in red asks why people need to read original old philosophy works when modern summaries are always clearer. The second woman asks in response if the woman in red knows Thomas Nagel. The woman in red confirms that she does, calling him the greatest 20th century philosopher of consciousness. The second woman quotes him "...even a chicken might be called perverted in an extended sense if it had been conditioned to develop a fetishistic attachment to a telephone" (Nagel, 1969). The women in red realizes "wait. The point of reading masterworks is to find quotations that can be taken out of context?" The second woman replies "we are drawn to them, like a horny chicken to a dial tone."

Micah Schwartzman (University of Virginia School of Law) has posted The Asymmetry of Religious Motivation (135 Y.L.J.F. 467 (2025)) on SSRN. Here is the abstract: The Supreme Court’s current approach to religious freedom reflects an asymmetric view of religious motivation. Under the Free Exercise Clause, the Court has increasingly embraced a motivational sufficiency principle, according to which a person’s sincere religious motivation is sufficient to render an act religious and therefore eligible for accommodation.
