Huge congratulations go to our winners of the 2026 Brian Faloon Prize for best undergraduate dissertation in modern History and of the 2026 Centre for Early Modern Studies Prize for best undergraduate dissertation on a pre-1820 topic. The winners were Patrick Collins and Louise Eccles. Well done!
The winners were respectively Patrick Collins with a dissertation entitled ‘To what extent did racial hygiene and eugenics make the Holocaust likely or inevitable?’ (supervisor: Dr Aaron Donaghy), and Louise Eccles, who wrote about ‘Unravelling Jane Austen's Neatly Tied Endings: A Queer Reading of Female Friendships in Mansfield Park, Emma and Northanger Abbey with a Comparative Analysis to Miss Anne Lister’s Diaries’ (supervisor: Prof. Christina Morin).

📢 Some great news from Orkney! A new report shows Orkney Vole abundance last spring was the highest it's been since efforts to remove invasive non-native stoats began. This small, elusive vole is found nowhere else and is threatened by the arrival of stoats (in 2010). 📷: Adam Hough
