I'd never heard of the Blackburn Lincock lightweight fighter until I saw this one in the Streetlife museum in Hull. Very beautiful, but it didn't get any orders.

Danelaw day five - over the bridge. 91 miles in five days, from Nottingham to Hull (if we're being picky, Burton Joyce to Hessle).

Danelaw day four: Linwood to Barnetby-le-Wold. 20 miles - a bit too much again. Market Rasen and Caistor both offered scanty refreshments on a Sunday. But I still liked it - a few hills and a few showers.

Danelaw day three - bomber country. 16 miles from Lincoln to Linwood. Nice little museum at Wickenby airfield.

Lincoln is lovely. But it's extraordinary that the cobbled street around one of the most beautiful buildings in the world is used as a car park.

Through the Danelaw day two: 22 miles from Newark to Lincoln. Too much really, and would have been even further if I hadn't ignored the Footpath Closed sign. Turns out it's not closed if you fight through a hawthorn hedge, jump across a ditch and commando-crawl under a mesh barrier.

So I'd hope the government looks carefully at the impact on the smallest businesses. Our report suggests an allowance - e.g. a business can simply keep the first £1,000 of tourist tax they collect.

More RNLI related news: the Old Lifeboat Museum in Poole has had to temporarily close because volunteers there were getting abuse. The stupidity of the balaclava mob and supporters makes my head explode. Are they so twisted that they seriously get a dopamine hit from abusing museum volunteers?

I've had very few birds around during the heat, but half a dozen juvenile great tits (I think) have just been splashing about in the frying pan on my garden table. Putting a big stone in it seems to have hampered the wood pigeons from bathing (and crapping) in it, but helped smaller birds.

A tranquil riverbank scene. 20 minutes earlier I had been wrestling with the remains of a dust devil at a thousand feet. Didn't dare leave the climb until 2,500, but then flew to the lush Test valley in search of calmer air and landed there. The rest of Hampshire looks like the Serengeti.

A gravedigger and his family, 1962. We think of the 1960s as basically the modern day, but millions of British people still lived like this. Gravediggers were probably paid quite well, too, compared to other manual workers. This is the reality behind the "corned beef of my childhood" nostalgia slop.
