New study led by S. Llorente-Culebras on drivers of knowledge gaps in global mammal traits databases. 📊 Traits like diet & body mass are known for >97% of species, but reproductive traits for <17%. 🚨 Biggest gaps: data-deficient, recently described, range-restricted species far from major cities.

Species names are commonly treated as unique identifiers, but how similar are they really? How far apart are congeneric species names? By analysing the scientific names of over 𝟐𝟎𝟎,𝟎𝟎𝟎 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐬, we found some interesting results. 🪸🦀🦈

Looking forward to reading this. When combined with the inevitability of typos and misspellings, highly similar names present a tricky problem for assembling and using large DNA reference libraries for environmental DNA studies.

Back to Sheffield after a six-month secondment in the MNCN-CSIC with @jhortal.bsky.social. It was an amazing time, both scientifically and personally... learning a lot, exchanging ideas, reconnecting with old friends, and making new ones for life. Deeply grateful for this experience!!! 😊

Compared to continental ones, only a few #marine species are considered #extinct. Now we have one more, the #snail Conus lugubris from São Vicente Island (Cape Verde Archipelago). This species had a very restricted range now lost to "development". www.iucnredlist.org/species/1922...

Exploring the universe of species names has been really fun. I always assumed that genera would be shared across species more often than epithets. It makes sense, right? A genus can include many species, while the epithet is supposed to be more, well, “specific.” 😅 (1/2)

Last week I visited the Center for Marine Studies (UFPR), Brazil 🇧🇷, to share recent works on marine LDG, sampling bias and some ongoing projects. It was so nice to return to this place full of good memories and catch up with old friends 😁.

Fieldwork is underway in southern Brazil, where I'm sampling eDNA with @marciakurtz.bsky.social for the 𝐺𝑙𝑜𝑏𝑎𝑙 𝑆𝑎𝑛𝑑𝑦 𝐵𝑒𝑎𝑐ℎ 𝑀𝑒𝑖𝑜𝑓𝑎𝑢𝑛𝑎 𝐷𝑖𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑠𝑖𝑡𝑦 survey, an international effort led by @jnmscience.bsky.social. 🌎🏖️🧬 During the first week, we worked along the stunning Santa Catarina coast.

Thrilled to share that I got a paper rejected today! 😄 #RejectionIsTheRule Recommendations? Rejection, minor revisions, and major revisions. Despite the rejection, the third reviewer made insightful comments that will definitely improve the study. Constructive criticisms make our science better. 👍

Just reached >1,000 records on iNaturalist, with many already contributing to GBIF. I've recorded at least 850 species so far—likely more, as some records are still unidentified. It's so great to be able to keep track of these sightings! 📷🪲🐦🕷️🍄🌿 Here are just a few examples...
