Many academics lack work experience beyond the academic bubble, making them pity themselves more than necessary. I'd welcome the next cartoon on academia's benefits such as the freedom to pursue our own intellectual interests, the privilege to mentor young minds, the obvious importance to society.

Compared to continental ones, only a few #marine species are considered #extinct. Now we have one more, the #snail Conus lugubris from São Vicente Island (Cape Verde Archipelago). This species had a very restricted range now lost to "development". www.iucnredlist.org/species/1922...

This colossal coral in the Mariana Islands is the largest of its kind! @noaa.gov scientists recently took the first approximate measurements of the coral during the 2025 National Coral Reef Monitoring Program surveys. It measured a whopping 14,500 square feet! oceanservice.noaa.gov/news/mar26/c...
