PLEASE ask me for my article! It's always a thrill to know that someone wants to read it, and I hate that knowledge is gatekept like this. Not only do we not get paid if you pay the fee, but we have to pay the journal thousands of dollars for the "privilege" of making it open-access (not paywalled)

Dear zoology Bluesky. Does anyone have any good examples of using glue to track animals? Eg, literally glueing on sensors, or taking hair samples? I heard of taking badger hair by putting up a sticky wire at a certain height. Anything good I’m missing???

HOLY SHIT DUDES fucking with the environment is now not just a sin (which Francis also said), it is classed as a direct fuck-you to God and a central tenet of the reasoning is the need to care for "our common home," i.e. you are morally obligated to think about the other people who also live here

New horror unlocked: pyrocumulonimbus clouds. “An extremely powerful fire-generated thunderstorm.” Seen for possibly the first time in France, these clouds are a sign that the fire has begun to generate its own weather… with powerful and erratic winds that, guess what, help spread the fire. 🔥

Happy birthday to the heatwave of 1976 which began today 50 years ago, peaking at 35.9°C. If a comparable heatwave happened in the current climate it would be 3-4°C hotter, peaking at 38-39°C. And the actual forecast is for temperatures of 38-39°C in the next few days with a red heatwave warning.
The summer of 1976 translated into a warmer climate.

#66: Corn
A screenshot of a Guardian headline to a column by Adrian Chiles. It reads 'Misery loves company: so allow me to tell you about the agony of my corn'1982
I am running across the field. The other boys are close behind me. I can hear their taunts echoing through the night—’Raggletaggle’ ‘Straw for brains’ ‘Tatty boy’. This is different from all the other times when they picked on me at school. This time they mean to kill me, I’m sure of it.
I run hard, fast, through the endless corn rows.

Today
The sun is setting behind the forest. From my vantage point in the middle of the field I can see the sky begin to purple. My body—not human, not any more—is clothed in the rags they dressed me in all those years ago. My face, a hessian sack; two jagged eyeholes, a slash for a mouth.
As the darkness comes I can feel my strength build with it. Tonight will be the night.
They are fathers now, those taunting boys. Their sins are distant memories, less solid to them than a half-remembered song. If I exist for them, it’s as a guilty secret, buried deep, like Roman bones.
But my memories are sharp and vivid. Their fists against my face, the knife that pierced my heart and left me dying; my blood seeping into the soil, feeding the corn that grows here; their hands on my body, pulling me across the ground, towards my final fate.
I step down from the wooden cross, let out a scream, and the corn—fed by my blood, nourished by my pain, alive to my misery—screams with me.
Somewhere out there in the town beyond the field, four men are facing their last night on earth. Four guilty men.
I pick up the rusty scythe that was left by my feet and begin to walk. The cries of the corn accompany my every step, vengeance pulsing through my bloodless limbs. Tireless, pitiless, I seek my revenge.

1982
The hands drop me to the earth, my eyes towards the stars. Above me, looming, I can see the face of the scarecrow, blank, unseeing, a lifeless mask.
“We’ll hide him inside,” say the boys, “That way he won’t be found.”
They lift me up and begin to dress me.
They make me the scarecrow, and the scarecrow—forever— I become.

W.H. Auden, it turns out, truly hated internal combustion engine cars.

A Curse
Dark was that day when Diesel conceived his grim engine that begot you, vile invention, more vicious, more criminal than the camera even, metallic monstrosity,
bale and bane of our Culture, chief woe of our Commonweal.
How dare the Law prohibit hashish and heroin yet licence your use, who inflate all weak inferior egos?
Their addicts only do harm to their own lives: you poison the lungs of the innocent, your din dithers the peaceful, and on choked roads hundreds must daily die by chance-medley.
Nimble technicians, surely
you should hang your heads in shame.
Your wit works mighty wonders, has landed men on the Moon, replaced brains by computers, and can smithy a "smart" bomb.
It is a crying scandal that you cannot take the time or be bothered to build us, what sanity knows we need, an odorless and noiseless staid little electric brougham.
