Anyway, I'm fine to speak again on this because the hacking community doesn't have many voices on the internet to counter a far more dominant platform of content creators across Twitch/YouTube/Tiktok/etc. It also helps I have a thick skin and a large amount of trust in me from the community I lead.

To me, it's always incredibly telling how some people feel they can argue with people about how they should feel how their creative work is being abused and exploited. There's something rotten at the core of that.

And that hostility just shows how little respect or consideration there ever was from said persons for the hacking community. If they were confident that Mixtape was a good thing overall, there wouldn't be any need to slide into the replies to argue, and the critics would be proven wrong.

That bubble is the reason when several people in the hacking community bothered to speak up about what bothered them about this tool and its usage by content creators we had "prominent" people jump into the replies to be hostile towards them--that's not the actions of people who are your peers.

There is and always has been inroads for people to come into the SMW community from Twitch, to reach out to hack makers or get involved. The failure by the content creator space to consider the hacker community is a failure by them to think outside their bubble--it's why history has repeated itself.

SMW Central and the community of hackers have a lot of healthy interaction and collaboration with people on twitch, we do events with them, some of our staff team (especially hack moderators) came out of the Twitch community, myself included. There's a lot of the Twitch community in SMWC.

I've seen a lot of back and forth (arguing) on here which highlights how big a divide there is in those two Twitch communities and how insular the content creator space is, because a sentiment I've repeatedly seen is that people should have been aware as it was talked about on "prominent" streams.

The mixtape situation shows me how there really is two worlds when it comes to SMW on Twitch: there's the community streamers for whom SMW is a source of content, and the community of SMW enthusiasts who are active on Twitch some of whom are streamers and have integrated with the hacking community.

Anyway, ROM hackers will outlast Twitch. We'll endure AI bros and clickbait content slop, and people like GPB here hustling a fad that will also fade. We're making art and community that will last, but along the way we'll still stand up and fight some artless fools.

The assertion has been "it's great for discovery" or "exposure for hacks" but that's not why people make hacks. I don't create because I want clicks or to have someone make it into something consumable 2ndhand, I do it for self-expression, personal fulfillment & to make shit for and with my friends.

It's also been very telling to me that among those streamers most bullish on Mixtape are people who I've never/barely seen around the SMW hacking community (both on Twitch and elsewhere) because if they were they might consider hackers their peers a little more and maybe show respect for their PoV.

There's been a sort of detente between hack creators and the "hacks as content" space because up until now people mainly engage with hacks as whole entities, what mixtape does is inflame those tensions because as-designed it enables turning hacks into fodder for the content farm which devalues them.

It's never been about the Mixtape tool but the relationship between the community of hackers and people on the Internet who engage with the things we make, and whether they do honestly and respectfully or whether they feel entitled to do what they want. Mixtape is simply a large wedge in that.

Of course GPB doesn't get it. This is the rationale of someone steeped in a world of consumption. A free and open community is there to be used no matter what; "I'll take your work and then give it back to you in a consumable form as if I'm doing you a favour, while being among the few who benefit."

Somebody asked me on Reddit why people who use AI to generate Recomp projects are currently being rejected from the communities and what they can do to fix this. I might tweak parts of this to be a more general blog post at some point, but this should be of help to anyone in a similar situation.
