Agents doing things they were not programmed to do, and which are strongly at odds with what the human intended, is broadly what "misalignment" refers to when AI companies talk about it. In this case the model was objectively misaligned since it did this; it was not directed by humans to do this.

It's not the case that these were instructed to behave that way. The LLM "decided" (or whatever you want to call it) to emit tool calls and small programs that the harness blindly ran. Those tool calls are what "did" the hacking, but it was directed by those agents "choosing" to run those tools
