I want to post this to give parity to the "Dangers of #AI" discussion. Without venturing TOO far into politics I want to mention I feel there could be some political motivation here. 🤷‍♀️ In any case, he makes a good point. If we DO consider AI a race, we are up against stringent competition abroad.

I have a lot of questions, but I'll start with three. 1. Does this mean providing your data to train AI models? 2. What's considered a "qualifying" researcher? 3. What is a "select" institution?
Embedded text reads: Today, we’re introducing ChatGPT for Academic Researchers—a new program providing 100,000 scientists, mathematicians, and engineers with free access to our most advanced AI models.

We’re beginning with 10,000 accounts this summer and plan to expand to 100,000 researchers through 2027.

Participants will receive:

🔬 One year of free access to our most advanced models, including GPT‑5.6 Sol Pro
💻 Access across ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and Codex
📚 Expanded deep research, higher usage limits, and larger context windows
🧬 More than 75 life-science skills and research-focused connectors
🤝 The ability to invite up to four institutional collaborators
🎓 Training, hands-on support, and opportunities to learn from fellow researchers
🔒 Business-grade privacy and security, with data not used to train our models by default

Researchers are already using AI across the scientific workflow—from exploring proofs and testing hypotheses to analyzing complex datasets, reviewing literature, writing code, and preparing grant applications.

Our goal isn’t to decide which scientific questions deserve attention. It’s to put capable tools in researchers’ hands so they can pursue the questions they know best.

This program is part of our commitment of more than $250 million through 2027 to support external scientific research and discovery.

Applications are open today for qualifying researchers at selected academic institutions.
