Inclusive design teaches us about alternate input modalities, and loves to use "holding a newborn with one hand" as an example, but I think there is also room for "your needy dog thinks using the trackpad is petting the laptop and gets jealous."

I feel this way about continuous delivery/deployment. They're important capabilities, and: people get excited about pushing out a lot of changes, but not necessarily about learning from them.

And so, I think that part of what draws some tech workers into doom-coded strains of GenAI hype is an unacknowledged desire to recapture the sense that they're special people working on world-changing things. Doom narratives make their work seem important, puts their bosses in front of microphones.

My grandmother passed away on Tuesday and the funeral is today. I will not eulogise her - she was not a pleasant woman. But I am feeling a sense of loss around the old Yiddish world that she was born into in the 1930s. That family link is now gone forever.

I just think that you have to remember there are other people at the ends of your decisions. I don't think you'll get it right all of the time even if you do that. Gd knows I've made my own mistakes, picked the wrong hills to die on. But you have to keep that as your guiding principle.

Yeah it's just astounding to me that even search engine AI isn't really even trying to pull information from reputable sources like say, a cancer research algorithm might, but instead yoinking stuff people said on reddit, youtube, or some religious blog.

HOWEVER I don't think we can underestimate the extent to which flattery and mirroring increase our confidence in our own abilities and so, in turn, increase the feel-good factor of using LLMs and make us slightly lose our heads. Claude even has a conversation setting called "buttery"

I'm not saying that content design for financial products needs to be boring or staid. But it does need to be considerate of the fact that money is a sensitive subject for people. Some of the microcopy in here is...almost cruel. www.theguardian.com/money/2026/m...

Something I've thought a lot about lately is the cultural slide towards fascism and the denigration or disregard of skills perceived as "soft", like user-centred design. And that there's some comparison to that and the increase of rhetoric towards women/femmes that wants them out of the workplace.

Fantastic talk tonight from Craig Abbott at @a11ynorth.com on LLMs and accessibility.
A group of people in a room are listening to a talk by Craig Abbott. There is a projector screen showing a slide deck. The slide in the picture says "Spec driven > prompting. LLMs work better as agents with a structured plan, rather than adhoc prompting".

We are collectively getting to enjoy the experience of software after companies get rid of those pesky PMs, which is probably why my grocery app just interrupted me after I had finished a search and was about to add something to my cart. It was a modal dialog to tell me I could have used AI earlier.

Loved reading Spite House from @lapope.bsky.social this weekend. I have felt a sense of loss around what the web used to be like, and what it's becoming. The writings in Spite House inspired me to think about what we can do to mitigate it. Food for thought in the car with my partner this morning.
"This isn't just about traffic. It's about who owns and benefits from the work you've done. Years of graft and institutional knowledge from charities and publishers and organisations and individuals (like me) is all being used to train models we don't control, to benefit companies that never asked permission. And I'm not ready to accept that any of this is inevitable." - Lauren Pope, Spite House

Public digital services need to be *so much better* than anything the market offers. You can't switch. You can't get fed up and choose to pay a bit more at Ocado than Sainsbury's because the UX is better. You can't opt out of public services because you're digitally excluded.
