Not sure why but wrote some notes on rereading Grace Krilanovich’s The Orange Eats Creeps. “What bothered me before about the characters and their milieu has faded for me, as content tends to fade faster over time, leaving the ruins of form, which lasts, if it’s there.” alvinlu.co/city-god/on-...

Grace Krilanovich was a local phenomenon when I first read The Orange Eats Creeps, or at least that was my impression at the time.

Lockdown-years pub from @fictioncollective2.bsky.social, kind of identity-anchored, free-jazz headtrip that defined Black Arts (& rarely seen since), serpentine sentences circling in on themes of sex (Black, Asian) and death (capital punishment). Heavy & ecstatic reading if that's what you're after.

In Heaven Everything is Fine by Grant Maierhofer appears in our latest issue! Maierhofer is the author of over ten books of fiction and nonfiction, and the founding editor of Index Press. bit.ly/4f96M3H
In Heaven Everything is Fine by Grant Maierhofer. It was June. He sat on the couch, bound firmly in his marriage, his fatherhood, his life. The dog sat next to him, or lay further down the couch on a small pillow. His youngest daughter dangled a small toy in front of the dog’s face, sort of mock-hypnotizing the dog with a growing excitement, a ferocity. No, not ferocity. It was simply a tiny bit more aggressive, and that was all. He had yelled at the dog to stop eating different things, which he did at various times—as did the mother—throughout the day—and had become self-conscious about yelling at the dog. The mother was upstairs talking to somebody. There were several toys on the ground that the dog could eat, and chew, and play with all it wanted. There were others it could not. read more at the link in our bio

Fond memories of each of the Sukenick Prize finalist manuscripts. So good and so strange. Thanks to everyone who sent something. Whenever I go through a submissions pile I'm reminded this is where the real work—keeping literature vital and (very important) weird—is happening.

"Trashman goes after The Man". Subvert Comics n 2, 1972. Spain Rodriguez.
Viñeta de "Trashman", de Spain Rodriguez.
En el cuarto superior una mujer, a punto de fallecer, le dice a Trashman, inclinado hacia ella:
"Go.. after them Trashman... get them for me... remember.. FIGHT THE OPRESSOR! unh.."
Trashman piensa: "she dead".
El resto de la viñeta es una imagen de Trashman subiéndose a su moto en movimiento, con la ciudad al fondo, mientras dice:
"I'll get them for you baby".

"Et Tu, Babe". Mark Leyner.
He began to lose consciousness. I shook him and wet his lips with a couple of drops of Gatorade.
"If you what, babe?"
"If you... if you squander your precious beautiful days on meaningless labor whose"-he coughed up blood-"whose ultimate purpose is to further enrich the ruling elite or solidify the hegemony of the state... you're a sucker."
His eyes rolled back in his head. I shook him furiously and threw the rest of my Gatorade in his face. But it was too late. He was gone.

Totally beside the point, but reading Karen Hao’s Empire of AI am struck by the complete lack of physical description of the spaces where all this drama occurs, which happens to take place in the beautiful city I live. There is only the tracing of massive, invisible flows of money, data, and power.
