They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

Someone asked me how I can continue to write fiction where people find a way to be better when the world now shows it's not the case. And fella, nothing the fash want you to do more than give up on hope but you really must not. If it's getting too dark to see you don't turn out the lights.

Book cover for Daydreamers by Alvin Lu (Fiction Collective Two): Upon the discovery of an unfinished manuscript left behind by his late father, a son’s act of literary translation quickly descends into a ghost story of family rumors, art, and the history we inherit, whether we want them or not. As the son translates the mysterious text, what emerges is a narrative haunted by betrayal, artistic rivalry, and a murder in California’s Chinese literary underground—one that was never solved but perhaps was fictionalized. https://www.uapress.ua.edu/9781573662123/daydreamers/Book cover for No One To Hold the Distant Dead by K.L. My Favorite Bit: K.L. Schroeder talks about NO ONE TO HOLD THE DISTANT DEAD
K.L. Schroeder is joining us today to talk about their novel, No One to Hold the Distant Dead. Here’s the publisher’s description: Inga Nyström chose to leave Earth and help the colony of Nordenmark escape a looming ecological disaster. But by the time she arrives, the catastrophic degradation of the planet's terraformed environment has already passed the point of no return, and she finds its people defeated, sleepwalking through a slow-moving death.

Still thinking about this note I found in the children’s section of the public library when I worked there back in 2018. This kid tried to warn us…
A picture of a library shelf with a small rolled up note on it. The note says “read this” in child’s handwriting.A picture of the note unrolled. In the same child’s handwriting it reads “beware of the future!!”

This is a cliff on comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko. It's about 1 km tall. If you jumped from the top, it would take you 47 minutes to reach the bottom, and you'd probably be OK.
On the right of the image is a sheer cliff face marked with vertical striations; talus lies at its base. The left of the image is in almost total darkness, and the background is deep space.
