Another Dutch offering for #AdoorableThursday. This door contains a grille through which I could peek into garden of the De Hof van Wouw almshouses in The Hague, dating from the 17th century.

I’ve just read the will of my 4x great grandfather, written in 1834. The codicil is dated the very same day! I imagine it was a case of: “🤬, I’ve forgotten the parcel of land with the pigsty” which was *opposite his house*! He left it to his wife. #FamilyHistory #Genealogy

Beautiful, poignant news here. One of my dear friends has written and recorded two songs. One is in memory of her great uncle who died in #WW1 aged just 19. They will be released on 13 October, the anniversary of his death. £1 from every sale goes to the Poppy Appeal. #FamilyHistory #MakingMusic

This looks like it’ll be an excellent event tomorrow. Sadly work and distance mean I can’t attend, but I do need to investigate whether Mr H’s great uncle might be mentioned in the records. He was an apprentice at LNWR in Crewe before WW1, and was injured while serving.

I’d intended to mix some #FamilyHistory with a decent amount of #Gardening today - it’s been dry and sunny here. But yesterday afternoon I put my back out (cheers, outrageously bumpy roads of East Sussex). So instead I’ve alternated between studying and doing my own research. Osteopath booked.

I've been playing with tithe maps from @thegenealogist.bsky.social. The plots marked in green were owned by my 4x GGF, William Bellamy (1784-1842). The map covers part of the tything of Elton in the parish of Westbury-on-Severn, Gloucestershire. (There's some OS map overlay showing.) #FamilyHistory

Have you ever heard a fairground organ playing and wondered who chooses the music? Ten years ago it was my son (left) and his cousin who were left in charge. They chose the theme from the film ‘The Great Escape’.

I’ve always loved Last Night of the Proms. Tonight we had a fantastic tribute to Dolly Parton, and the slightly crazy but wonderful Scotch Snap from tenor Nicky Spence. Throw in a Les Dawson intro to the Sailor’s Hornpipe and a thought-provoking speech from Finnish conductor Sakari Oramo.

My cousin served as a volunteer lifeboatman in Cornwall for around 30 years. He did everything from helping holidaymakers cut off by the tide to genuine lifesaving moments. He also dealt with the tragic consequences of lives lost at sea. Please don’t politicise the #RNLI.

I’ve called it a day with Mr H’s Cope ancestors today. Meet Sarah Cope: Father = John Cope Husband = John Cope (probably a cousin) First-born son = John Cope But in better news, I’ve now ascertained that two John Copes in my tree are actually the same person, so I’ve merged them.

For Bank Holiday Monday, I give you some scenes from Henrik Willem Mesdag’s amazing panorama of Scheveningen from 1881. This was one of the most amazing art ‘experiences’ I’ve ever had. With a circumference of 120 metres and a height of 14 metres, you’re completely immersed in the painting.

Sadly I can’t make this event (too far away / weekday) but it’s a useful reminder that one of Mr H’s great uncles was an apprentice at LNWR in Crewe in the early part of the 20th century. One of the many things on my long to-do list.

Best name from today’s #FamilyHistory research: Skiffington Armstrong. Not an ancestor, but a boarder enumerated with Mr H’s 3x GGF in the 1861 Census in Cheshire. Born in Ireland, he was the curate of Doddington, a church serving the Delves-Broughton family estate, major landowners in the area.

Now home and catching up with domestic chores after a wonderful few days in the Netherlands. We’ve seen amazing art; had a food-themed guided walking tour; visited museums and churches; drove along the dams and saw the enormous flood defences, and enjoyed some local beer.
