Reminder that when you're presenting to a crowd, put nothing on the bottom third of your slides. Most people can't see it.
View of audience at a talk: loads of the words on screen are obscured by other audience members' heads.

… grew up in Leeds, I said she probably called it a ginnel. Then I said that here on the Kent/Sussex border it’s known as a twitten. I *think* that the penny may have dropped at that point … If nothing else, she was impressed at this southerner’s passing knowledge of northern vocabulary! 🤣

Great to hear that you’re keeping an old tradition alive! I was trying to explain my interest in English regional traditions and dialect to a young colleague last week. Initially she was confused, but I cut through when she showed me a photo of an alley and asked what I called it. Knowing that she

There’s a special day to eat peas? I had to look that one up! And yes, it’s mentioned in ‘The English Year’, by Steve Roud.

One of my great-grandfathers played in an accordion band! Like you, this was a nugget gleaned from a newspaper article. It even lists some of the tunes that were performed. #AncestryHour

I shall wait until March for the #Crewe centre to open, and plan a #FamilyHistory research trip in the area.

Hello, #AncestryHour. How is everyone keeping? At the weekend I had a lovely time at a #FamilyHistory show and met up with several genie friends. No big research discoveries here as I’ve been focusing more on my studies; my palaeography skills are slowly improving.

Many years ago I worked in sales for Mars Confectionery. Even back then they had done computer modelling of how best to arrange a shelf of different chocolate bars to maximise sales. It also applied to vending machines.

What an interesting question! Who was the last person to look at the file you’re looking at in the archives? How long ago was that? Has anyone *ever* looked at it since it was first placed there? #Genealogy #FamilyHistory

As others have encouraged you, you have encouraged me. 😊 Three years ago on that lovely day in Rye you said “of course you’re experienced enough to study for the @pharostutors.bsky.social intermediate certificate”. I did, and I passed with distinction. Now I’m studying for the advanced certificate!

St John’s, Tunbridge Wells. It was opened in 1858 and it’s certainly no great looker, but the description is rather harsh!

Jane Hough 🌳🧬🏡 @allthosebefore.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
It’s not just Pevsner. I have Newman’s ‘Buildings of England: West Kent and the Weald’ as it covers where I live. My local church is described: “badly proportioned interior, the aisles excessively wide, and opening into the transepts by excruciatingly splayed arches.” Clearly not impressed!

Jane Hough 🌳🧬🏡 @allthosebefore.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
It’s a lovely-looking building, but Pevsner’s description seems like a back-handed compliment.

They’re both amazing resources for NZ research. I only have a handful of ancestors who emigrated there, but I’ve found lots of information about them. Funnily enough, my Devon ancestors who lived just outside Plymouth, England emigrated to New Plymouth in Taranaki, on the north island.

Another Dutch offering for #AdoorableThursday. This door contains a grille through which I could peek into garden of the De Hof van Wouw almshouses in The Hague, dating from the 17th century.
The view through the metal grille set into a black wooden door. Beyond it is a pathway flanked by lawns, with red brick cottages just visible behind.
