This is spot on. I can’t get my head around how this isn’t a bigger issue in the news media. Literally thousands of people being made redundant in an important sector of society and neither the media or government show concern.

Financialisation of UK Higher Ed. & functional stupidity
The higher education sector across the anglophone parts of the world, amongst others, is in continuing crisis. At present that crisis is most visible in the UK through the proposed, and implemented, redundancy programmes, real-terms cuts to overall investment in research and ongoing (at present - annual) national level pay disputes between the largest academic trade union and the employers group…

Thanks for the reply. It’s the number one issue for so many of us at post-92s as our typical students are hoovered up by those up the food chain.

When is the government going to wake up to the decimation of our University sector? If this was any other sector the number of redundancies would be headline news.

Totally agree with this. Balloting for pay when so many of us are worried about redundancies was a huge misstep. Thinking that tacking on some concerns about the state of HE to a ballot on pay was just amateurish. Once again UCU fail to address the real problem.

My first thought is that this might discourage Universities making academics redundant if it might impact on students experience of teaching. My second thought is it will likely just lead to programmes and teams being cut if they’re perceived to be poorly taught or might be.

This is appalling coming from Labour. Where’s the promotion of social mobility in this? The way things are going they’ll soon get their wish. A post-92 I’m aware of is aiming to get into the apprenticeship market. Others are now very likely to shrink significantly. It’s a war on the working class.

Thanks for this is. As someone under threat of redundancy I recognise all of this. I would also add a general despair that the government knows this loss of professional jobs is happening and willingly ignoring it. Managerialism reigns supreme.

It’s estimated that 10,000 jobs will be lost in HE this academic year. Where’s the media reporting? If this was a 1000 jobs at a steel plant it would be headline. One has to assume the government want to diminish the sector. UCU is hardly making any noise either.
