lol liberals don't realize how much they've adopted nationalism and how much minorities have adopted nationalism in turn. everyone's quickly going to do a "if we burn you burn with us" attitude unless people get this shit together and have a damn spine to attack the right wing directly

Seems that State Library Victoria now requires presenting ID and a recent bill as a prerequisite to accessing material through the Heritage Collection Reading Room. This used to be available with simply a free library membership, and while you can still access this for free, there's an added hurdle.
Our Researcher Membership is now live. You can sign up through my.slv.vic.gov.au, or by following the prompts the next time you request an item for viewing in the Heritage Collections Reading Room.

What do I need to do?

Follow these steps to add Researcher Membership to your account:

1. Log in to my.slv.vic.gov.au.
2. Go to Extras in the top menu.
3. Select Researcher Membership and activate the slider.

To finalise your membership, bring ID that includes your photo and address to any of our ‘ask a librarian’ desks. This could be a driver’s licence, or other photo ID plus a bill from the past 6 months showing your address. Our collection includes unique, irreplaceable and highly valued material, and this security measure will allow us to better protect these items.

Jacinta Allan stuff seems like madness to me. She might be comically unpopular but unless you hope that voters lack object permanence, problem is largely Brand Labor and not her. Any policy changes on the unions and stuff will just be blood in the water. Should have booted her earlier if needs be.

i don't see why we have to argue about this. the geography here makes it very simple. West Falkland becomes "Malvena", governed from Buenos Aires. East Falkland - hereafter "Falkland" - is governed from London. easy peasy

This seems like an entirely reasonable objection from the union. If giant flashing lights create worse conditions for drivers then it's difficult to argue they'll actually make conditions safer (and surely what should be done instead is to make the level crossings safer?)

You almost couldn't have made these criteria more restrictive and arbitrary. You could walk up to the counter, scan your membership card, and if you say "takeaway please" they wouldn't donate a cent. Ridiculous stuff!
Only dine-in orders made at the front counter of a Grill’d store qualified, whereas online orders, takeaway, and even those made in a restaurant but at a table via a QR code did not.

Additionally, customers had to be members of the chain’s Relish loyalty program for their purchases to be eligible.

Not something I get to say very often but this cop is entirely right. Especially with rising antisemitism, allowing one specific organisation centred around a particular religion to carry weapons, but no others...it could create really poisonous discourse.

I wonder if there's a term for this sort of leftist indignance I see wrt hard-right parties' election results being proportionally reported on. In any case, I don't care for it. Reform won so little because only a portion of councils were actually up for election, but they won a plurality of seats.

The Farrer results more or less confirm my priors (with how high One Nation are polling, they're going to secure a swag of regional seats and make it very difficult for the Coalition to form government) but even with that, I am shocked at just how low the Coalition vote fell. Not even 25%?

In light of the news about BRS being arrested for his war crimes in Afghanistan, and the sickening attempts from racists to excuse his villainy, this week’s throwback poem is from my third collection, Non-Essential Work.
The Poems I Couldn't Write This Week
The poem about two Afghan boys whose throats were opened by Australian men. The cynical poem about there being no reason. The poem where they still live. The eco poem about the river the cut boys were left in. The enraged poem about the graceless water. The war poem on the devastation of Empire.
The war poem about artists whose taxes paid for the devastation. The family poem about my mother once again not meeting me at the cemetery. The redacted poem using military language like it can be salvaged. The spiritual poem exploding over intended and unintended targets with no effect.
The transactional poem that requires an effect. The bilingual poem that swallows God. The servile that licks the boot of the buyer. The political that invents a moral arc of democracy.
The ancestral that won't let the dead rest. The dark that refuses to kill the poet. The domestic that imagines itself as separate from all the others. The poem that poems. Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un. The mistranslated: verily we belong, and
verily
we
return.

A ‘few scallywags’ gossiping or a premier under threat? Inside Labor’s push to ditch Jacinta Allan
More than a dozen Victorian Labor sources, including minsters and factional powerbrokers, confirm move for leadership change For weeks, Labor MPs have been quietly weighing the future of Jacinta Allan. In hushed conversations in the corridors of parliament, MPs have cited her baggage – her time as Daniel Andrews’ deputy, her role in the cancelled Commonwealth Games and as the minister overseeing the Big Build at a time corruption allegedly was allowed to grow unfettered in the construction union. Even more damaging, some argue, has been her hesitation to act once the corruption was made public. Benita Kolovos is Guardian Australia’s Victorian state correspondent Continue reading...
