Retired people, esp. people who retired early, and stay-at-home parents: these are the backbone of local community stuff. Because in order for it to happen? People need to have *slack*. They need redundancy - inefficiency, by capitalist or market-oriented metrics - so they have capacity to build.

It's work that can't be really be done unless people in the community have both time and energy. If everyone, or nearly everyone, is scraping by - if most or all of the healthy working-age adults are working full time hours and commuting two-three hours a day in order to keep the basics going?

So getting involving in volunteering with a youth group last year (and showing up to the inaugural Parents' Association meeting at my kid's primary school this year) is being a real eye-opener for how much unpaid work is involved in making a community where community events and shit can happen.

Here's Backpack as a yearling in 2007, unable to put weight on the injured paw. Holly took her cub & moved upriver, away from aggressive bears who might harm him at Brooks Falls. Fishing was harder for the pair, and she risked both of them struggling or starving, but he was SAFE.

Backpack in 2007, nursing an injured paw that is turned under, so that he can't put any weight on it. If you're wondering why they didn't provide vet care, it's their policy not to interfere when an injury is natural and not caused by human activity.

Omigod, this is the most heartwarming story possible! Backpack (bear 89) is the son of the 2019 winner of Fat Bear Week, Holly (bear 435). In 2007, he injured his foot & a practice of riding on momma's Holly's back had a new meaning: he was mobility-restricted while it healed. So Holly moved him.

From DISCVR blog's Facebook page, a momma bear & a yearling cub on her back in the shallow water. I think the background has been swapped out, and I can't rule out some AI use there? God, Facebook has become the social media for AI slop : (

We had a party where everyone consumed alcohol at uni. I don't remember what happened next but I do remember two male friends having a very heated argument next to my bed, and I'm reasonably sure I dodged a bullet there (I have other less felicitous experiences, too)
