I'm disappointed in a few authors for distorting the facts about generative AI to be conciliatory in ways that are not helpful to the creative community. Also, how do they use AI in their work and are they being paid in any way, incl consulting gigs and speaking appearances, by AI companies?

There have been some attempts to set up mechanisms to pay authors but as far as I’m aware they’ve not had much impact. www.theguardian.com/books/2021/j...

This feels like someone's said 'AI isn't going away, so we need to make the best of a bad world with it', and then found a way to make the worst of a bad world with it. There is no ethical use of gen 'AI', and those who stole our creative output need to be held to account for that.

This is the wrong way to frame this. Israel’s idiot Lord Of The Rings propaganda pitch, in which they are the great White City, the first defence against the orc hordes of Mordor, is immensely appealing to fascists all over the world. It was designed to appeal to racists, cranks and fascists.

Today is World Day Against the Death Penalty. Let us seek to end this inhumane and immoral practice around the world, especially here in America. It is so deplorable that in the 21st century this is going on in a modern democracy.

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

I get why people are asking “what have we become?” but the answer is “exactly what you’d expect from a decade and a half of the press reciting the spicier bits of Mein Kampf at the public, and our whole ruling class agreeing we need to crack down on the lesser races and their Bolshevik allies”.

I haven’t seen that. Watched (and very much enjoyed) some of it but missed MP. Will track it down. I think he’s a terrific actor. (Even in Python you watch a sketch where they’re all in costume and think ‘wait, who’s that one?’ and it’s always Palin, unrecognisable).
