I think a youth misspent mucking around with console emulators has left me without the pathological fear of 'black bars' around video content. I just don't get it at all – they're literally not illuminated; you can just not look at them. Plus it's a good place to put subtitles and playback controls.

Why is ebook self-hosting such a disaster? Basically every other medium has more or less turnkey solutions, while ebooks seem to suffer from being the hobby of people who adore USB cables and never impulse buy a book while away from their bespoke DRM removal pipeline
