It is a big day for #Firefox with the release of Firefox 157. I have been involved in a small part of this update for quite a few months now and I am really pleased it is available for more people to use. This update brings some subtle interface changes as well as bringing back compact mode and […]

Just noticing that NMS's bokeh weirdly has the same issues as fake phone bokeh, despite photo mode presumably having access to the depth buffer

That was most enjoyable. What isn't enjoyable is that when ADE inevitably bites the dust, the only remaining avenue for library books in the UK will be Libby, the ebook reading app that gives you exactly three font choices, none of which are suitable for a novel (the three choices are `serif` […]

eInk Carta 1300 is stunning. 300 dpi and no colour filter layer makes my eyes happy

@Goodwithcolour TBF the article doesn't say it'll make you happy per se

@0xabad1dea sounds like they deliberately picked conductive materials, presumably to trip the train detection and block the line – so the goal is presumably disruption instead of damage. Still dangerous, of course.

I think a youth misspent mucking around with console emulators has left me without the pathological fear of 'black bars' around video content. I just don't get it at all – they're literally not illuminated; you can just not look at them. Plus it's a good place to put subtitles and playback controls.

Does anybody have recommendations for a team level @1password replacement? In light of their backing DHH and his repulsive views I'd like to be able to recommend a replacement for my company. We need shared vaults, TOTP, and centralised user management and vault recovery as a minimum. #1password

#Audacity 4 is a really cool case study in how to do a comprehensive UI overhaul that people are actually really excited for (which is vanishingly rare in this industry). If you haven't seen it, @tantacrul's video from last year on the astonishing amount of work this was is fascinating […]

I'm now trying out BookOrbit on the server, plus Readest on my phone. Seems to be working well, although I hadn't realised that BookOrbit in particular is veeery new. Still, it's working fairly well barring some layout bugs – sync with Readest works really well, too. I'm already a quarter of the […]

Why is ebook self-hosting such a disaster? Basically every other medium has more or less turnkey solutions, while ebooks seem to suffer from being the hobby of people who adore USB cables and never impulse buy a book while away from their bespoke DRM removal pipeline
