Another optimization find from 🤖: apparently `Post.where(…).first` is 50% slower than `Post.find_by(…)`, because how ActiveRecord internals work, and this is called a lot in the firehose processing loop (to look up thread roots, quote post targets, and posts being deleted) 🤔 #ruby

That confirms a meaningful difference without ruby-prof:
where.first: 0.5341 ms/query
find_by: 0.3356 ms/query
difference: 0.1985 ms/query
So find_by reduces lookup latency by about 37%; equivalently, where.first is about 59% slower.

Interesting - Ruby 4.1 (from git) adds native decoding of LEB128 "varints" used in CAR, but I asked the bot to check if it changes anything in my code, and it says it improves the performance a lot w/o YJIT, but with YJIT it's about the same or even worse 🤔 #ruby docs.ruby-lang.org/en/master/NE...

It helps substantially without YJIT, but much less with YJIT. A direct R^ substitution is actually counterproductive under YJIT because it allocates an array for every varint.
I benchmarked tests/mackuba.car:
108 MB
330,153 framed items
325,905 varints are two bytes
4,201 are one byte
47 are three bytes
So this is very representative of CAR section lengths.
Isolated varint decoding
Times are for one pass over all 330K varints:

Current StringIO#readbyte loop 57.7 ms 28.0 ms
Ruby getbyte cursor 63.1 ms 25.6 ms
unpack("R^") 28.1 ms 28.8 ms
unpack1("R") + calculated size 24.5 ms 24.8 ms

Without YJIT, unpack1("R") is about 2.35× faster than the current code.
With YJIT, it is only around 13% faster. YJIT does a very good job with the hand-written byte loop.

Section framing
This includes decoding the length and extracting each section body:
Implementation Interpreter YJIT
Current StringIO path 96.8 ms 60.9 ms
StringIO using R^ 69.7 ms 69.8 ms
String cursor using R^ 56.4 ms 62.6 ms
String cursor using unpack1("R") 56.9 ms 55.2 ms

So:
Interpreter: cursor-based unpacking is about 1.7× faster.
YJIT: unpack1("R") improves framing by only about 9–10%.
R^ is slower than the current code under YJIT.
The reason is that:
value, offset = data.unpack("R^", offset: offset)
allocates a two-element array on every call. In the benchmark:
Current StringIO framing: approximately 2 allocations per section.
R^ framing: approximately 3 allocations per section.
unpack1("R"): approximately 2 allocations per section.

Brilliant: I'm working on my Unicode talk… and have a Unicode issue. 🤣 My (up-to-now) trusted #Pry console (for Ruby) gives me > '��'.encoding => #<Encoding:BINARY (ASCII-8BIT)> instead of the expected 'ä'.encoding => #<Encoding:UTF-8> (which I DO get in #irb or a plain #Ruby script).
