Greenshank #birdart #watercolour Trying to keep the regular painting going!
A watercolour painting of a wading bird, the greenshank. It is standing on one leg in a shallow pool of water. There is a deep red background which is inspired by the samphire growing on salt marshes during the autumn.

All the plastic humanity has ever produced is ~10 billion tonnes. Humans emitted ~10 billion tonnes of CO₂ into the atmosphere in the first three months of 2026. When we appreciate orders of magnitude, we see how intractable the CO₂ problem becomes once we dump it into the atmosphere.

I was not informed by the BBC that they would have a right wing political figure or lobbyist on after me to rebut what I said. The individual in question went on to spout lies about China, etc. to distract attention from the Trump administration's assault on climate action. This is unacceptable.

If almost every person on Earth did nothing but make cups of tea, day and night, one every second, and poured every single one into the ocean, that's how much heat the ocean is absorbing. This heat absorption, driven by our CO₂ emissions, causes sea level rise, marine heatwaves, and polar ice melt.

‘7.6 billion mugs of tea a second’: a new way to make sense of the heat pouring into our oceans
Most of the heat from global warming ends up in the oceans, not the atmosphere.

Coming to this post late but this is absolutely true. Zappers are one of the largest on-going gimmicks to reduce mosquito numbers. It's more likely to wipe out pollinators and beneficial insects. There is definitely a strong placebo effect due to the "zap" we hear and then associate with a + effect.

The rise of larger vehicles like SUVs and pickup trucks, with their taller hoods and larger blind zones, has contributed to a 75% increase in pedestrian and cyclist deaths since 2009. Until we design better streets and ban these vehicles, people outside these vehicles will keep dying.

This might be one of the funniest chart about energy scenarios I’ve seen. You can hardly see “actual” for gas
Winners and Losers
The IEA overestimated gas growth in Asia and underestimated solar

Gas
• Forecast 547 TWh
• Actual 17 TWh

Solar
• Forecast 465 TWh
• Actual 1,333 TWh

Note: Shows expected growth in Asian power generation between 2018 and 2025, based on actual 2018 generation, actual 2025 generation, and the 2018 World Energy Outlook's Current Policies Scenario estimates for 2025. Actual 2025 generation figures are from Ember.

These plants also harvest dew, which condenses out of moist air. Edges and hairs make especially good foci for condensation as they radiate heat & cool faster. This species is from Namaqualand, in southern Africa. 📷: Dipcadi crispum Karel du Toit CCBYNC4 #Asparagaceae #fog #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

Think of CO₂ removal like a time machine. How far back does planting 100 million trees take us? One mature tree takes up ~25 kg of CO₂/year, so 100 million trees will take up 2.5 MtCO₂. That's a time machine that takes us back ~33 minutes in a year. Nature will not save us from fossil fuel CO₂.

If you're a victim of repeated flooding, you need to start looking at land use upstream. One of these sponges up vast amounts of water, releasing it slowly, the other does not. One reduces flooding, the other *increases* it. Without addressing this core driver, it'll just keep on getting worse.

Ancient pine trees growing in eastern Spain have quietly recorded more than five centuries of Mediterranean weather. Analysis of tree rings clearly shows that todays storms and droughts are becoming more intense and more frequent than almost anything the region has experienced since the early 1500s.
