Wanting to "resolve this in the boardroom not the courtroom" is how Newsom justified the settlement. The unquestioned mindset here is that these power struggles are best negotiated among oligopolies & oligarchs, not the democratic polity. Should be disqualifying as a serious presidential candidate.

NYT has now independently corroborated all the major allegations against Susan Collins in the ProPublica report, including that investigators were prepared to move against her and then Trump intervened to shut it down. This put Trump in a position of exceptional and extortionate leverage over her.

"Narrowed what counts as bribery" is more than a bit of an understatement. They've legalized bribery. Clarence Thomas, Don Jr., Susan Collins, Leonard Leo... Corruption IS the system the Roberts Court built.
Building a corruption case against elected officials requires extraordinary proof of a quid pro quo arrangement, in part because the Supreme Court has narrowed what counts as bribery.
