I'm not arguing with this point--death threats are extremely common!--and absolutely, politicians should deal with it, but I keep thinking about the fact that Melissa Hortman and her husband were murdered and nobody blinked an eye.

Feels pretty well established at this point that getting death threads from right wing actors is treated as just a cost of existing in this world, even though they do in fact murder people, and anyone on the left who uses vaguely harsh rhetoric is accused of "raising the temperature."

We've lived for so long with this mythology that sure, the wealthy can be cruel. But at least the cruelty has a point. Profit! I'd like us to open our hearts to other possibilities. Power doesn't just corrupt! It can also breed truly reality-distorting levels of incompetence.

I also happen to have a BA in political science, I don't think its a bad degree to get, but also, just in terms of academics Senator Warren fits the profile of Treasury Secretary better than Bessent, lets not even get into experience

Alex @alexanotherone.bsky.social · 1h
Worth pointing out that although degrees aren't the absolute qualifier for cabinet offices Bessent has one of the thinnest academic records for any Treasury Secretary in awhile Most of them have at least one graduate degree, usually two, Bessent has a BA in political science

One of reasons finance bros like Bessent hate Warren is misogyny of course but Also the fact that she knows their language and how the sausage is made in the financial world and routinely humiliates them publicly

This is the piece that Americans (and the "America has exported all this" crowd) miss because all things are always about us. This is a coalition-wide issue, and has been. One of big powers drifting just provides an opportunity to focus on it. Hungary, you can survive. Germany . . .

This is something I keep mentioning: the current era with Left parties and personalities collapsing towards conservative populism or even fascism is just the new version of the 90s, when they were all collapsing to neoliberalism. "Clever" operators and the weak willed both go with the flow

So 1) yes, but 2) I think there is a danger here in assuming that 'authoritarian relapse' within the Status Quo Coalition is a USA-exclusive problem. *Most* coalition members have a major right-wing authoritarian party. Your defense policy should assume any one state could relapse at any time.

It's certainly a notable finding that Christian nationalists rarely attend church, but to go from there to saying that this is not a revival of Christianity seems like an unsupportable link. Exclusionary nationalism is Christianity, not in all forms, but in a major form it has historically taken.
"Christian nationalism in Britain driven by people who seldom go to church, says report
Research challenges the notion that the growing visibility of crosses and other symbols reflects a revival of Christianity"
