Anything you share with one person can now become a dataset for someone else's AI agent to mine, without so much as a heads up, because the "human in the loop" doesn't give a shit about ethics.

A lot of people in the comments are mentioning that USA Today is owned by Gannett. One of my big concerns is that *every* Gannett-owned newsroom might have access to my interview now. I will never interview with any of them again.

Made it back to Boston after a very long but wonderful day in Vermont for TWIST, lots of comics and zines! I had such a good time, everyone was the absolute best! (and now I cannot wait to go to sleep immediately for like 12 hours)

I would advise people not to talk to USA Today for any reason, about anything ever, based on this thread. It's bad enough that the whole profession is circling the drain, but for a remaining publication to feed interviews into a slopifier without telling sources? When it's about SA? I just.. 🌋

"I just use it for research" like it's neutral, like nothing built by big tech ever had bias baked in? "It helps me find papers." Okay, but do you think there might also be a chance the plausibility generators surface papers by men more often than women, for instance?

I've been a journalist for 35 yrs &never done anything like this. Esp in this area, I can't think of anyone reputable who'd do this. I hate this happened to you & IMO it's not ethical. IF it were possible they were going to share yr interview internally, you should have been told up front at MINIMUM

Earlier this week, I agreed to interviews with two USA Today journalists. They wrote fantastic articles about the Cornell case that I'm proud to have been a part of. What I did not know is that their employer considers interviews to proprietary and opens up recordings to be used by any journalist.

I can’t imagine any off the record remarks were removed from the audio recording before it was shared—including before it was potentially uploaded into an AI service.

I am always so charmed when people trading for zines and comics at shows are like downplaying their stuff with “I have no idea if you’ll even want this but it’s (proceeds to list specific things you love or are very interested in)” and I get to be like YES THAT IS WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT LET‘S GOOOO

But also you should hype your stuff up more instead of downplaying it much as I do love being like “au contraire, my friend, I absolutely want to trade for your wonderful zines, just look at them! They’re amazing!”

Several weeks ago, Phil Tippett's legendary animation studio in Berkeley, CA closed. An anonymous hero noticed a folder of CDs. This turned out to be hundreds of unseen hi-res images and videos from Star Wars, Robocop, Jurassic Park, etc. ~90 isos for you to browse: archive.org/details/tipp...
A casual Star Wars alien fella at the cantina, in a sun faded, reddish photo. Someone will be mad at me for not knowing who this is. Phil, a balding Caucasian man, poses a model of the garthok, an antagonist from the Coneheads movie.Phil, a balding caucasian man, points at some CG on a CRT computer monitor, as a younger man looks on. The screen shows a model of a dinosaur attacking a jeep, while there's an actual physical model of that event in the foreground for reference.an isolated shot of a star wars vehicle. Sorry, I don't know star wars lol

The ad was for some snake oil that would cure your old bones or some shit, but Mr. Salt and Pepper just seems so credible, the kind of guy where men want to be him and women want to be with him, so of course it gets generated repeatedly for scams.

Alexandra Gallant-Lee @alexandragallant.com · 01/10/2026

I did a good deed though, recently, over the weekend, I told a bunch of people in their 60s and 70s about “Mr. Salt and Pepper” the AI generated man who is so incredibly ubiquitous in slop, especially in catfishing/pig butchering scams.

That’s what’s so galling to the people in those communities, too, just showing up in a fly by night post “I didn’t really put in effort to learn anything about you but I do know enough to know that you have value I can extract” Just careless - a lack of respect for people’s time, work, and energy.

Ugh, so many posts on Reddit now, too, someone comes into a community, seen it in crafting, parenting and art business related comms with “what are your pain points?“ which I just always translate as “How could some vibe coded garbage I make pretend to help you so that I can charge you for it?”

Some of these are monthly and do come out on the first and others do an “every so often” model and I think they just liked the idea of posting on October 1st as like “the start of fall” vibes sort of thing, a new season calls for a new newsletter.
