Yeah, there's good content here but growth FEELS like it's heavily slowed, and the reputation Bluesky has for harassing and bullying centrist and centre-left types is surely one factor.

Someone on Threads noticed you can type any random sentence into Google, then add “meaning” afterwards, and you’ll get an AI explanation of a famous idiom or phrase you just made up. Here is mine

• Al Overview
The idiom "you can't lick a badger twice" means you can't trick or deceive someone a second time after they've been tricked once. It's a warning that if someone has already been deceived, they are unlikely to fall for the same trick again.
Here's a more detailed explanation:
• Licking: "Licking" in this context means to trick or deceive someone.
• Badger: The badger is a wild animal, and the phrase likely originates from the historical sport of badger baiting where dogs were used to harass

This battle over Abrego Garcia is simple. It doesn't matter that he was here illegally. It doesn't matter if he's a gang member or if he's a wife beater (both of which are disputed). It doesn't matter if you think he deserves to be deported or to be in prison. / thread

I was curious if there is a case to revoke citizenship beyond "we don't lie this person" (probably not a good basis tbh). It looks like no? Mr. Angus, respectfully, why are you doing this? You know there's no legal means to revoke Musk's citizenship, and that changing the law to do so would breach the Charter—because you and your party rightly voted against it a decade ago. Those signing the petition may not know better, but you do.
From the speech in the House of Commons by Lysane Blanchette-Lamothe (Pierrefonds—Dollard, NDP), Hansard vol 147 no 98, 41st Parl, 2d session (Friday, June 6, 2014), Debate on Bill C-24, Strengthening Canadian Citizenship Act:

"We also want to remove clause 8 of the bill on the revocation of citizenship, which did not exist before. Bill C-24 gives the minister the discretionary power to revoke people's citizenship without giving them the right to appeal. That is extremely worrisome.
Again, experts are unanimous on this. There are major problems with this aspect of the bill. Ms. Macklin, the representative of the Canadian Association of Refugee Lawyers and a professor at the University of Toronto, had this to say:
I would remove citizenship revocation. It's unconstitutional.
I think our criminal justice system is perfectly adequate to handle crimes, criminal offences, and it does so just fine."

Every time I try to be more forgiving about blocking, I end up returning to the @mattyglesias.bsky.social approach. If I think someone's rude, or annoying, or going on and on about something I don't want to listen to: sorry! My attention and patience are limited. Nothing personal, it's just curation
Tweet thread from Matthew Yglesias, January 29, 2023:

Reminder: If you’re not someone I follow, I will block you on a hair trigger for extremely minor acts of rudeness.

You’ll be saying to yourself “that wasn’t hate speech, that wasn’t harassment, why am I blocked?”

The answer is “it was a tiny bit annoying."

Imagine you a stranger who wandered up to me at a party and then said “____” to me. If I’d want to walk away from the conversation with you, that’s a block.

Because guess what: You *are* a stranger who wandered into my mentions and started talking to me.

If you want to be rude or annoying that’s your right, but I’m blocking.

Remember, if you publicly threaten, dox, defame, and insult a person you disagree with, using as much profanity as possible, that will convince people who aren't already on your side. I mean, it probably won't convince them that your view is correct, but it will certainly convince them of something.

The debate over block evading is surpassingly ridiculous even by internet drama standards. On its own, block evading isn't harassment by any reasonable definition; at worst, it's impolite. Not to mention its opponents are selective in their opposition: screenshots are only bad when Bad People do it.

Apropos of nothing in particular: I've recently found myself thinking a lot about the conclusion to this 2021 Freddie deBoer essay. freddiedeboer.substack.com/p/that-one-s...
But that doesn’t change the fact that it’s the activist class, the Twitter-obsessed class, the collegiate class, the vengeful “progressive” NPCs that have poisoned the well by normalizing attempts to destroy people they disagree with. No one is saying you shouldn’t advocate for your values. You absolutely should be vocal and passionate, and you are free to invoke moral language, and you certainly don’t have to personally like the people you disagree with. But you don’t get to threaten people’s lives, which is very common in some social media spaces, and you don’t get to silence anyone, and you don’t get to dox anyone, and it’s profoundly fucked up to try and separatesomeone from their job in a world where you have to work to eat. That can never be an authentically progressive or left-wing action, I don’t care how righteous you think your movement is. There’s no excuse for that behavior, especially given that the people who are guilty of this are almost all perfectly empowered and socioeconomically secure. You can’t run a political party under these conditions, or a social movement, and we shouldn’t have to. Advocate for your values, do the work, build the coalition through persuasion, accept that people will always disagree with you and that this is a healthy condition, and stop pretending that you are the subaltern when you’re really a whole industry of A students who went to elite colleges and have never known what it’s like to not be listened to and taken seriously.

To put it simply, grow up. And stop trying to destroy people. Like you yourselves keep saying, canceling doesn’t reliably work, so why bother? Judging by the utter lack of meaningful change since last summer, neither have the protests or riots. That’s not a nice thing to say, but it’s reality, and if you are sincere about helping those you claim to speak for, your first duty is to efficacy. So maybe time to try something else.

Because, regrettably, Jack Smith has no choice. I don't understand why anyone expected him to act otherwise. We went through this already in 2019. As @benjaminwittes.bsky.social wrote at the time:
Mueller lists four “considerations that guided our obstruction-of-justice investigation.” The first of them states that “[t]he Office of Legal Counsel (OLC) has issued an opinion finding that ‘the indictment or criminal prosecution of a sitting President would impermissibly undermine the capacity of the executive branch to perform its constitutionally assigned functions’ in violation of ‘the constitutional separation of powers.’” Because Mueller is an officer of the Justice Department, “this Office accepted OLC’s legal conclusion for purposes of exercising prosecutorial jurisdiction.”The use of the word “jurisdiction” there is not casual. Mueller does not say he was guided by OLC’s opinion in the exercise of his prosecutorial discretion or that he was influenced by OLC’s view in formulating his own thinking on the law. He describes himself as bound by OLC’s opinion as a matter of jurisdiction. That is, in his view—a view with which I agree—Mueller lacks the authority to indict the president. Indeed, the office declined to make a “traditional prosecutorial judgment” because it was jurisdictionally barred from reaching one of the only two determinations such a “binary” judgment can yield.
