Pro cyclist here who grew up in abject poverty as an only child. When I started cycling seriously in my teens I needed extra calories mom couldn't afford. I used to go to the local food bank and pretend I had three siblings. They knew and never said a word. They were true saints.

… But historians distinguish something more disturbing: Selbstgleichschaltung, in which organizations, professions, businesses, universities, newspapers, and civic groups began adapting themselves to the regime before they were necessarily forced to do so.

I was in the hospital cafeteria and Mitch McConnell was there too. He was eating a plain baked potato with no toppings or spices and the nurse feeding him was making airplane noises.

i am losing all control at ‘springtime for frankenstein’ (from mel brooks’ memoir)
Let me tell you a little side story here about a foreign release of The Producers. It did fairly well in Europe, especially in Sweden.
I had become friends with a Swedish journalist and film reviewer named Björn Fremer. Björn asked my permission to use an alternate title in his review, instead of calling it Producenterna ("The Producers") he wanted to use my original title, Springtime for Hitler—Det våras för Hitler. It caught on, and the marquee in every theater in Sweden playing The Producers displayed my original title, Springtime for Hitler. It worked! Det våras för Hitler was a big hit. So much so that the Swedish film distributors decided to put a new title with Det våras för... ("Springtime for ...") in front of all my subsequent films that played in Sweden. For in-stance, instead of Blazing Saddles it was Det våras för Sherriffen,
"Springtime for the Sheriff," and instead of Young Frankenstein it was Det våras för Frankenstein, "Springtime for Frankenstein." And so it went, every one of my movies that ever played in Sweden had a "springtime" in front of it. I both blamed it on and profusely thanked Björn Fremer and his Swedish film journalist cohorts for all that Swedish success.

The bloody cage fight on our White House grounds is not a matter of culture. This travesty pisses on a country that committed itself to the virtue of self-governance--not turning it over to the highest bidder who stuffs the pockets of a deranged despot only interested in his own power, wealth & ego.

My ancestors had no real right to come to America but they did, and now I'm supposed to believe the government has any ethical power to say who can be a "citizen," based on birthplace? To be a citizen is to reject such ideas.
