Historical surveys focused on structures & buildings long before they recognized cultural landscape features, leaving disparities in inventories of historic resources. It’s always seemed absurd to me, for example, that a dam would be seen as historic while the river it blocks is not considered.

Dams & bridges fit easily in the ‘built environment’ focus of traditional historic preservation in the U.S., while landscape features like rivers are more likely to be ‘invisible’ when assessing effects, falsely pitting perceptions of cultural vs natural resources against one another.

I recently switched from Android to iPhone. Was already enjoying Apple Maps but installed Google Maps because I’ve used it for two decades. Deleted it this morning. I understand having a policy that follows USGS but renaming Lake Ontario is a case of exceptional idiocy.

I wrote an essay about the St. Croix River's geographic history—its place in the world, its connections to the surrounding region, its intersections of land, water, and wildlife, the ways people have navigated it over time, and the maps they’ve made. www.agatemag.com/2026/08/huma...

I spent a couple days last week doing research for my book at the Wisconsin Historical Society in Madison. A beautiful building full of archived knowledge, helpful librarians, and letters and photos no one had looked at in decades.

Our local beach requires a 10-minute break when everyone is out of the water at the top of each hour. During today's 5 pm break, a loon swam inside the buoys while I watched from the sand. Just another way birds are more free than you and me.

The border between Minnesota and Wisconsin is about 300 miles long. The St. Croix and Mississippi Rivers comprise about 260 miles of that. Roads run along a mere 11 miles of the border. This is one such stretch: Wisconsin on the left and Minnesota on the right.

Paddled Horse Creek in western Wisconsin yesterday. Flows down the valley carved by glacial meltwater. Shot culverts, limboed under bridges and electric fences, saw wildlife beyond measure. Creek meanders across the valley, we went 12 miles to cover 5.5 miles as the crow flies. Excellent adventure.
