George is right. We no longer have to kill these animals to live but that goes for most animals. If you care about the planet, either preserving nature or preventing climate change there's something you can do to help immediately. Eat less meat.

There aren't many days when you can kayak off Start Point, renowned for one of Britain's most dangerous tidal races. But yesterday the stars aligned, so I bunked off work. Delighted to see Rupert Kirkwood (the Lone Kayaker) out there. He took this picture of me +1. Before you ask: yes, it's real. 🧵

So much like the receded shorelines of ancient Lake Lahontan, Pleistocene lake of the Great Basin. Drive through the Basin & Range, and ten thousand years ago wave action created sediment & cobble berms terraced on hillsides - remnants of a vast lake. Just like Gale Crater. Go, Curiosity, GO!

"Colourful" is a euphemism for"one-time jailbird whose résumé seesawed between achievement and disgrace, and who inspired abiding public fascination with headline-grabbing accounts, both fictional and personal, of ambition, self-promotion, misbehavior and scandal".

Fair enough but the government should be able to work that out. According to AI it looks like most high earners are past the age where they need to use childcare.

Sure but the reduction in salary is less than the reduction in housing costs so your disposable income is greater. How much would you pay for an equivalent property within an hour's commute of the city of London? Maybe 4x that much on 1.5x the salary?

I may have misinterpreted your reply which I took to mean that housing was still expensive outside of London. Peebles btw is a substantial county town in itself within commuting distance of Edinburgh so yes, if you can't afford London get a nice job in Embra instead :-).

Housing outside of London is much cheaper. As an example here's a lovely detached family home in a beautiful part of Scotland within commuting distance of Edinburgh. espc.com/property/55-...

If you're on £100k a year I'm sorry but I have little sympathy for any claims of being poverty stricken. If you can't pay your bills then you're doing something wrong. That said the cliff edge is obviously wrong and it would seem a minor change to fix it given few are actually affected.

Alan Fresco @alanf.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
I agree that if you have a million pound house and no income you could sell it and buy a £700k house and generate £12k a year indefinitely which would be fine. I'm not sure what £700k gets you in London but it's probably not bad. Outside of London a £700k house is still very nice.

The other point I'd make is about million pound houses and £100k a year salaries. Move out of London/SE England and £100k is a v. good wedge and a million pound house is a mansion whereas in London it's a fairly modest dwelling.

A point that is often missed and is germain to your "old trump the poor" assertion is that after you stop working you are with a fixed set of assets. You can't put in more hours or get another job to improve your circumstances. You are at the mercy of the chancellor and the stock markets.

Vomparing pensions across countries is notoriously difficult. We don't pay for healthcare for example, pensioners rents are subsidised etc, etc. Sooner or later the triple lock as it stands has to end, pensions can't keep rising in real terms indefinitely. .... but you know all that.

...and if they'd chosen the 28th many people would have joined the march, an MP or two might have turned up and spoken and the government might have been shamed into pressurising Israel. But no, they'd prefer to cause maximum offence and alienate ordinary people from their cause. Why?
