I haven't done any real photography in years. Ended up taking a last minute trip to visit a model buddy over the weekend. She's training with kung fu swords. Seemed like a good time to dust off the gear. (mildly nsfw because of a nude rear end)
A sepia toned, monochrome image of a nude woman with a sword. Tattoos cover her body. She's in a half lunge looking to the left with her back directly to the camera. The illumination comes from the left which highlights that side of her body leaving the right side in shadow. Her left arm is extended. Finger pointing. Her right arm holds the sword above her head parallel with her left arm. The tip of the sword extending not quite as far as her pointing hand. The background is almost entirely black with a small splash of light behind her.

first thing that comes to mind is Neal Peart's quote "Adventures suck when you're having them". If it sucks now, may it become a fun adventure story in the future (and happy birthday, the world got better when you were born)

It's almost space heater season.
Three figures in dark robes stand before a castle as the moon rises. The castle is on fire! The first figure has a face made out of a space heater. The next figure has a face made out of an extension cord. The third figure has a face made out of a power strip. The text reads: Home safety traitors. Always plug your space heater directly into the wall, never a power strip. Keep it at least 3ft away from flammable items. Turn it off before you leave a room or go to sleep.

now, just need someone to come up with the parts list for the LEDs. sure, you may not be able to calibrate them without special equipment, but I'll bet just getting a collection would go a long way. (it always amazes me how little some people notice crappy light. I kinda envy them)

and for things like movie reviews, I like grouped collections of the ratings. (e.g. rating for cinematography, acting, music). They don't necessarily need to be the same type though (e.g. some might be simple thumbs up/down, which others are multi star ratings or whatever)

alan @al9000.com · 16/09/2026
4 stars works too. I just don't like 5 star (or other odd numbers because I want to know what side of the good v bad (or whatever) rating you're on. If you tell me something is 3 outta 5 I don't know if that means you recommend it or not.

alan @al9000.com · 16/09/2026
6-stars - you have to choose whether it's closer to high or low. For any system, custom labels for definition consistency: 6/6: This will improve your life 5/6: I really enjoyed it 4/6: It was fine 3/6: Not a waste of time, but blah 2/6: Yeah, it’s not worth the time 1/6: Avoid like the plague

I definitely read it as 325kb shipped to browser. I get both numbers are worth considering, but if I'm only gonna get one, I want the one that impacts the folks using my site over the one during dev. (in this case just the fact that you can remove it is cool enough for me regardless of size impact)

Ok folks, I wrote social media posts (at least, the ones for the official account) so as a reward, have a cool diagram we've discussed yesterday on stream 👀 that I may or may not have a prototype for 👀👀 (no promises though, a lot that goes into making this *real* real)
Hand-drawn style architecture diagram of a community-shared infrastructure server for an open-web hosting setup. On the left, a purple "User" node says "let's make cool stuff on the open web!" and step 1 uploads their site to a "Tangled Knot" box holding three Git repos. Step 2, the uploaded site gets built by "Tangled Spindle" (annotated "needed?? we just don't know"). Step 3, "ATproto Dokploy" picks up the deployment, holding several site configs. Step 3.5, stuff runs in isolated containers, drawn as "FireCracker VMs or some of that bullshit (affectionate)" with two running sites, which a "HappyView Instance" pulls data from, all under the "watchful eye of the Tailscale, probably." A blue "Community PDS" circle sits beside clusters of other PDS circles and a note asking whether it maintains access/membership policies. At the bottom, "ATproto NGINX (cursed)" serves a visitor asking "Hello! Can I see cool stuff from the open web?", with a side note that they'll switch to Caddy when Trezy rewrites HappyView in TypeScript. A legend lists what "Sites" may be: personal blogs, webrings, community forums, personal labelers, chatrooms, community wiki, alongside boxes for Labelers, Microcosm, and an Image Service marked "co/infra has one!
