With the current Amnesty International situation, I think this is a good time to re-promote my upcoming book, 'JK Rowling and the Anti-Trans Panic' (Ohio State University Press), which partly analyses JK Rowling's activism in relation to organised transphobia. Out in September; pre-order now.

Gender Penalty? Linguistic Discrimination and Perceptions of Female Football Commentators | Gender and Language
Abstract This experimental sociolinguistic study investigates implicit attitudes relating to female football commentators. Several high-profile sports-media figures have claimed that women's voices are “too high-pitched” for commentary on men's football, a domain in which traditional, heteronormative gender relations remain especially dominant. With this critique in mind, we conducted a social perception experiment using voices artificially manipulated for pitch to investigate the interaction of pitch and gender stereotypes in this context. Contrary to the male-centred meta-discourse surrounding female commentators, our results show that listeners actually judge female commentators with lower-pitched voices less favourably compared with higher-pitched female voices. Male listeners, in particular, prefer gender-typical voices and male voices generally. These results support previous claims about the influence of stored stereotypes on the social evaluation of speech, how evaluations are dependent upon the specific gendered dynamics of a given domain, and the pervasiveness of a “double-bind” that female commentators are faced with.

Evidence that the argument against trans inclusion in sport often has absolutely nothing to do with sport itself, and instead is just another vehicle for transphobia. www.theguardian.com/sport/2024/f...
Screenshot of the article with the following highlighted passage: In recent weeks parkrun has been doggedly pursued by protesters and the media, unhappy at its policy of allowing trans women to identify as female. Never mind the fact that parkrun has always maintained that it is a running event and not a race, has no prizes and hardly any competitive apparatus at all. You can do parkrun on a mobility scooter if you want. You can do it with a pram. You can dope yourself to the eyeballs.
