Recent photo at the NHS. Over 6 years into #COVID, and we still have “wash your hands” under “AIRBORNE PRECAUTIONS.” We are failing hard to communicate one of the most basic lessons of this pandemic: Airborne means spread through the AIR. Clean air is infection control. #Airborne #PublicHealth #NHS

I am rarely affected by discourse on social media, but the current wave of posts asserting that Long Covid is psychosomatic has angered me. To be very clear: if you're asserting that LC isn't a physical disease, you're ignorant of science. End of.

Historialliset esimerkit osoittavat myös, että näissä tilanteissa juuri terveydenhuollossa olisi iso peiliin katsomisen paikka. Potilailla on oikeus tulla kuulluksi omaa hoitoaan koskien. Sekä yksilöinä, että myös yhteiskunnallisessa keskustelussa.

Potilaat voivat olla välillä omaa sairauttaan koskevista asioista väärässä ja suurimmalle osalle hyvin sopiva hoito on aina jollekin yksittäiselle ihmiselle huono. Hälytyskellojen pitäisi kuitenkin soida kun kaikki long covidin ja ME:n potilasjärjestöt ja vertaistukiryhmät koetaan vihollisina.

In this paper, we also describe the shift in the debate from “primary” to “secondary” psychologization and note that both are equally harmful because identical therapeutic consequences are derived from them. 👇
In light of these findings, the assumption that LC and ME/CFS are predominantly psychologically caused (e.g. -) is no longer tenable. The debate has therefore shifted: whereas the original question was whether LC and ME/CFS were essentially psychological illnesses or symptoms of psychological disorders, the post-infectious origin of the conditions is now largely acknowledged 1. Instead, the debate is now: to what extent psychological factors contribute to chronicity and persistence of LC and ME/CFS. Broadly speaking, there are two positions. On the one hand, there is the assumption that the course of LC and ME/CFS is substantially shaped by psychological factors, for example, by distorted illness perception, dysfunctional coping strategies, avoidance and deconditioning. This position can be found, for example, in many textbooks of psychosomatic medicine (e.g. 2) and is often linked to cognitive-behavioural models of illness. We refer to this position as "secondary psychologization," in contrast to the "primary psychologization" described above, which assumes a purely psychological causation. On the other hand, there is the assumption that both onset and course of LC and ME/CFS are determined primarily by biological processes (e.g. 10). According to this view, possible psychological symptoms are best regarded as secondary consequences or comorbidities of LC and ME/CFS.

Screenshot of a post by Mouse 🐭 (@MementoMousie) comparing society’s response to COVID with surviving a house fire. The post says it is like everyone experienced a house fire 3–6 years ago, then began unplugging smoke detectors and throwing away fire extinguishers because they didn’t want to think about it. If their house catches fire again, they ignore it. The author says the frustrating part is showing people evidence that fire can be extinguished so they don’t have to live in fear, but they still ignore it and no one admits the situation is unsafe and unnecessary.

This assessment is ghoulish, absolutely vile. "Hey, you can't afford to live and get care? Dying is free!"
Those experts also found that, even when access to assisted dying was restricted to those at the end of life or with a terminal illness, disabled people, older people, and particularly older disabled people, "may feel subtly pressured to end their lives prematurely due to attitudinal barriers as well as the lack of appropriate services and support".

Despite fears that extreme poverty could increase pressure on people to seek an assisted death, as has happened in Canada, the government's equality impact assessment instead concludes that the bill "may have a positive impact on those from lower socioeconomic backgrounds by making assisted dying available without incurring cost".
