Watership Down is the classic British kid trauma, but mine is a bit unusual - I don't think my dad really understood the concept of books that were too scary for children, so I got read it as a bedtime story!!

when searching for a GIF leads Google to think you've fallen into AI psychosis and are hallucinating being viciously defamed by Glinda the Good Witch of the North
a Google search for "Ariana grande why are you coming for me so" (referring to an SNL scene where she plays Maria from The Sound of Music and doesn't understand why the nuns are singing about her shortcomings) results in the AI overview declaring "This is not Ariana Grande. This is an AI text assistant. There is no personal attack happening."

Another vote for Le Guin (I love her short stories, and A Wizard of Earthsea is a fantasy classic for a reason) and The Fifth Season (brutal though, be sure you're in the headspace!). And, This Is How You Lose The Time War is an epistolary love story set in the midst of, well, a time war.

A pope and an antipope in mediaeval Europe go from excommunication to sex communication (early sexting via carrier pigeon, featuring some scorching hot calligraphy). St Peter's Rivalry.

Two vets in a small farming community clash over their differing treatment of the same sheep, leading to hate sex in a nearby horse trailer. Bleated Rivalry.

Spending my bank holiday coming up with the next gay series to take the world by storm. Two guys working in different whisky distilleries meet at a trade show and start an illicit romance. Call that Peated Rivalry.

My world, my Earth is a ruin. A planet spoiled by the human species. We multiplied and fought and gobbled until there was nothing left, and then we died. We controlled neither appetite nor violence; we did not adapt. We destroyed ourselves. But we destroyed the world first.

We're at a point where there are no cheap options to retreat to and no price points that guarantee quality. Every run-down studio is $1400, every fast food meal is $17, every luxury condo has peel-n-stick tiles, every $300 pair of boots falls apart. Endless expensive mediocrity.

when they said there'd be bread and circuses, they should have specified that the bread would cost 200% more than it did four years ago and the circuses are only available on your least favourite streaming network for $19.99/month

Still enjoying Saltsea Chronicles, but my god that card game is a chore. I don't know if I'm just bad at it or the AI partner is intentionally stupid, but it's like Bridge if Bridge came with random card values and a penalty for winning too much.

Jay @aihal.bsky.social · 18/02/2024
Enjoying it so far, it's very Le Guin-esque (antagonists have their reasons, protagonists have their conflicts, babies must be cared for, there is always time to play cards).

Jay @aihal.bsky.social · 18/02/2024
Started Saltsea Chronicles, because one can never have too many visual novels centred around post-apocalyptic community and interpersonality (Citizen Sleeper, I Was A Teenage Exocolonist, etc., etc.)

Flu update: slept 12 hours last night, left the house today for the first time since Tuesday, and made it alllll the way to the Tesco at the end of the road. Then had to make dinner at breakneck speed before the last of my energy drained away. Going to be a fun weekend 🙃

It's...not bad if not unpredictable, there are some great moments (especially early on) but some bits of the plot are tracing paper thin, and the supporting cast are a comic relief mess of Brits and Aussies and Emily Blunt planking repeatedly for no apparent reason.
