That "the google one" was easiest to access because it was available on their school computers is interesting paired with this response from Google:"Google focuses on encouraging critical thinking and has specific protections for users under 18, she added"
Kaitlyn Ruano saw the effects of AI in the Advanced Placement Art History class she taught in Miami, where the school district made Google’s Gemini chatbot available to all high-school students last year. She was shocked in July when she saw a much larger portion of students than she’d expected hadn’t passed the AP test, including kids who had been getting A’s and B’s in class. “I had kids come to class after saying, ‘Miss, I had no clue what half the material was, I’m not going to lie to you. I’ve been using AI all year,’” she said. The Miami school district declined to comment.

“The Google one was the biggest temptation, because it’s the easiest to access,” said 15-year-old Sophia Chatzigianni of Fairfax County, Va. She saw her Human Geography and Algebra II grades nosedive to C’s on assessments as she relied on Google Search AI summaries and interactions with its AI mode chatbot on her school computer. Once she quit using AI, her grades improved.

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

AI gives companies and governments immense power to change what is "true". It's easy for them to update the single, central tool to produce convincing mistruths and lies to suit whoever is in power. AI should not be in schools.

Sure seems like “AI” is a political project being pursued by some less than awesome people and now is a very good time for building coalitions of students, teachers, and caregivers to resist and refuse these people’s attempts to further undermine public education.

In this country, stopping people from learning how to write has historically been a form of social control and oppression. But I'm sure these "a.i." companies and their mouthpieces just want what's best for all of us.

So many school districts are putting a pause on AI. NYC and LA paused AI, helping nearly a million students. Parents and educators have seem the research that shows how students who use AI learn less, and they're demanding big tech like Microsoft and OpenAI get out of schools. 💪

LNG Canada Phase 2 would double output to 30 million tonnes a year, while global gas demand falls and a glut approaches. And they want to expand before proving Phase 1 is safe: its flaring already exceeds B.C. permits. Real leadership means scaling up clean energy, not doubling down fracked gas.

When the AI bubble bursts, the "AI experts" will just move on to their next grift. Students, teachers, parents will be left to clean up the AI mess was forced into the education system. If we push back now, we won't have to clean up as much wreckage.

Oh okay it _could_ do those things. It doesn't right now, but you can't prove it couldn't. This is exactly like the crypto bros who said Bitcoin _could_ become the standard world currency. Or Metaverse bros who said it _could_ be bigger than the internet.

We as parents, educators and members of a society must create environments where students can learn. That means keeping schools free of anything that compromises education: companies trying to make a profit, charlatans trying to push the latest fad for their own gain. Keeping schools free of AI.

Schools have the ability to turn off that feature. There are other search engines. In any other situation, a site that harmed kids would be blocked, but when it's AI, somehow it's OK to give up. It's frankly a pathetic abdication of responsibility.

What the panel says again and again is "AI is part of kids lives". One of the panelists says "students used to search for information online, but now Google gives you an AI overview" and students use that. As if that's a justification for giving up teaching students how to think for themselves?

Name another technology that is universally acknowledged by scientific research as being harmful to children, but that somehow _must_ be put in schools. "Well some kids drink underage at home, so we need to teach them how to drink in moderation at school."

In the last 6 months the tone of these discussions has changed, but the conclusion has not. Now even boosters will admit that AI has negative effects, that students use it to offload thinking, that it harms them. But then they conclude with "so we have to teach them how to use it well."

The discussion goes as you would expect for one put on by the Toronto Star, containing 3 pro-AI voices. They say that a ban on AI is not effective, a ban on cellphones is not effective, that students must be taught how to use it "appropriately". Thoughtful refusal is not acknowledged.

AI is a microcosm of capitalism in how it externalizes costs. AI makes it incredibly easy to generate mountains of slop that others have to sort through. Whether it's terrible code that needs reviewing, or text that needs facts and sources to be verified. These costs are never seen by the user.
