I gasped when this ARC arrived. I adored Chad Harbach’s THE ART OF FIELDING. The follow-up novel THE BRIGHTNESS, also featuring Pella and set at Westish College, will be out in October. Character-driven fiction at its best.

Tomorrow, the House will vote on the NDAA, which includes a provision to merge parts of our military with the IDF. This amendment is an existential threat to American sovereignty and democracy. Every member of Congress must vote NO.

“AI in libraries” should be “what can you tell us about corporate profit-driven control of search and retrieval” instead of “when are librarians going to get on board.”

It is notable that a horror author won a Pulitzer even though other horror novels have won because authors & books branded as genre rarely get considered. Much thanks is also due to Victor LaValle & Rebecca Makkai. We don’t get to know what happens in those spaces & conversations.

Lovely Ursula Le Guin. ❤️

A pedagogy that relies on the "Cliff Notes" sort of thing travesties the study of literature. To reduce the aesthetic value of a narrative to the ideas it expresses, to its "meaning," is a drastic impoverishment. The map is not the landscape.

I am sorry to hear about CJ Cherryh's retirement but I hope she enjoys the down time. Merchanter's Luck was one of my favorite books in high school, and a big part of the reason I loved The Expanse so much, it felt like going back to that world of scrappy merchanters in space caught up in big events

HR 7661, the Federal book banning bill, is unfortunately still alive. Please call your reps and say NO ON HR 7661! You can read the bill's full text here and see if your Congressperson is one of the 19 co-sponsors: www.congress.gov/bill/119th-c...
A digital drawing of author Maia Kobabe, a white nonbinary person with short brown hair wearing a patterned blue shirt, who scowls while holding up a copy of eir book GENDER QUEER: A MEMOIR. Maia is saying: H.R. 7661 is a national book banning bill which seeks to remove any book that "involves gender dysphoria or transgenderism" from all public schools in the US. This would ban my books, and any other book with trans themes, from public schools. PLEASE call your House Reps and say: NO ON H.R. 7661!

Just read LOST LAMBS by Madeline Cash, a quirky debut about an imploding family. The overall tone reminded me of Barbara Gowdy’s MR. SANDMAN, a novel I always meant to read that is hard to find these days. Anyone read both? Curious if I am correct about this read-alike hunch!
