Shout out to the librarians.

When I was a kid, I loved two things in particular – puzzles and reading. The puzzles came first, as we always seemed to have a giant jigsaw in progress on the dining room table. And I got into jumbles, word searches, rebuses, crosswords, and the rest as soon as I could read.
And as I read, I was drawn over and over again to stories about puzzles. We made regular trips to the Bellevue branch of the Nashville Public Library, where I began working my way through books that introduced me to big puzzles and the people solving big puzzles, people who I learned were loosely classified as "detectives."
And there were a lot! A massive collection of original Batman comics. Encyclopedia Brown and his western cousin, The Great Brain. The Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew. The Boxcar Children. The Westing Game. "Murders in the Rue Morgue" and then everything else Poe wrote. Every single Sherlock Holmes mystery, every single Agatha Christie one too. Countless more I can't even remember

📣 I am super thrilled to announce that during “Emerging Science Week” the MSAF subgroup of the Biophysical Society will run a webinar with three awesome speakers on “Lipids Feeling the World.” More info, including how you sign up, is contained in the ALT text of the image! Please share widely! 🧪
Lipids form the compartments that organize life. While doing so, they interact with an incredible variety of other molecules and supramolecular structures—things that touch the membrane on either side, are embedded inside, or simply want to get through. What are the chemical and biophysical principles that shape such interactions? How have biomembranes evolved to become such versatile interfaces to the world? In this webinar we will hear from three scientists who have examined questions of this kind from different directions, focusing on different molecules, and using different tools.

Speakers:

(1) Janice Robertson, Dept. of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics, Washington University St. Louis, USA
(2) Luca Monticelli, Molecular Microbiology and Structural Biochemistry, INSERM, Lyon, France
(3) Rumiana Dimova, Biophysics Lab, Max-Planck-Institute for Colloids and Interfaces, Potsdam, Germany

Here’s the link to register:

https://my.biophysics.org/Events/Calendar-Of-Events/Meeting-Home-Page?meetingid=4ea7bbbf-b695-f111-8075-6045bdff16f4

Attention: you’ll be asked to sign in or create an account. That’s just to keep track and send you an access link. YOU WILL NOT HAVE TO BE OR BECOME A BPS MEMBER!

Know that libraries count things. How many people have cards, how many times a book or DVD or CD is checked out, etc. And then we take those numbers to our internal staff and say "look, people want this" to justify purchases, and then to local govts to say "look, we need to stay open".

Mandatory reviews by top health officials and checks for 235 disfavoured terms have left hundreds of vetted grant applications in administrative limbo.
