I just took 5 minutes to send a random email out to someone, just to tell them how much I love their work and why (had just read one of their papers again this am). No agenda. I think we need to normalize borderline gushing fan emails to our colleagues. Keep the motivation!

How do we represent physical drivers of gas concentrations and fluxes in streams, and does scale matter? How are stream slope and k600 effects distinguished? New publication led by Yuseung Shin, in @jgrbiogeo.bsky.social! doi.org/10.1029/2026...

The Effects of Stream Slope on Dissolved Gas Concentrations Are Mediated by Scale in an Example Low‐Gradient Stream
Variation in gas concentrations across a low-gradient stream was not driven by gas exchange despite clear pool-run distinctions Channel slopes at habitat and reach scales were strongly correlated...

I am a mom and scientist begging everyone to look closer at the muck. We’ve been conditioned to see wetlands as wastelands. But three decades of research, I see a fiercely defiant wilderness. The boreal mire is a dynamic carbon-trapping vault that in some places has outlasted ice ages. 1/

As both an academic and a writer, I am repelled by the "this looks like a long document. Would you like me to summarize it for you?" that seems to appear at the top of every pdf viewer now. NO. The *entire point* of good writing (either books or journal papers) is that every sentence has a purpose.

I haven’t asked others in a long time, but it seems to be on the manufacturing, sales, and billing ends for the past 3 years. The actual expertise of their service techs is great. When I worked with SRI, responses were far more prompt and their instrument was more robust.

Habitat variability is key to supporting consistent life in braided rivers. New research led by Holly Harris has shown that different parts of the river fluctuate at different times, which smooths out the boom‑and‑bust cycles of insects and fish across the whole river ‘braidplain’.

Franzi Schimmer captured this Grizzly bear in Brooks Falls, Alaska just floating along, tippy-tapping down the river, browsing the salmon. Prior to hibernation, up to 40% of a bear's body mass is fat, which is less dense than water (~0.9 g/cm^2), so the murder-monster is also a floaty-boaty.
