Forest Imaginaries: How African Novels Think x Ainehi Edoro
290 pp. January 20, 2026, Colombia University Press. Non-fiction. All quotes below are from an advance copy of the book. Zimbabwean folklore has the general concept of “bush” (sango in ChiShona, iganga in isiNdebele) rather than forest proper, but it was easy to locate it in Professor Ainehi Edoro’s Forest Imaginaries: How African Novels Think. It represents the ‘outside’: of village or community life; of normal or regular, ordered spaces; of day-to-day reality.

At ZamaShort we do not accept nor publish ai-gen derived works in any form or manner. We check all submissions individually both with ai-checkers and manually with an informed understanding of what ai-gen works (even partially) read like. All "writers" that submit ai-gen works are placed on a permanent blacklist. As we also require legal ID confirmation from submitters the blacklist is tangible and lasting. If ai-gen works do by chance slip through and are published we are contractually obligated on discovery to de-list said work and publicly notify this occurrence and our failing.

THE PALM-WINE DRINKARD by Amos Tutuola (1952)

"As I had become the greatest man in my town and did no other work than to command the egg to produce food and drinks, so one day, when I commanded the egg to supply the best food and drinks in the world to these people, at the same time it did so, but when these people ate the food and drank to their satisfaction, they began to play and were wrestling with each other until the egg was mistakenly smashed, the egg with the bowl broken, the egg itself broken into two. Then I took it and gummed it. But these people still remained there, even they not playing etc. and sorry for the egg which broke, of course, when they were feeling hungry again, they asked for food etc. as usual. So I brought out the egg and commanded it as before, but it could not produce out anything again and I commanded it three times in their presence but nothing produced When these people had waited was there for four days without eating and drinking anything, then they were returning to their towns etc. one by one, but they were abusing me as they were leaving."

This glorious, and wickedly macabre, wildly funny book of fantasy, inspired by tales from the Yoruba oral traditions, is a landmark in anti-realist representation in mid-twentieth century African writing. The artistry of Amos Tutuola (1920-1997) was underestimated and undervalued at the first publication of this remarkable book (and for much of his life), but now, nearly three-quarters of a century later, this novel continues to find new readers appreciative of the skill with which Tutuola uses the fantastic as a mode for exploring questions of ethics and politics in times of accelerated social and historical change.

THE FAMISHED ROAD by Ben Okri (1991)

Azare is a spirit-child. When he was born his mother recognised him and this recognition brought her sadness. For the spirit-child is one who has not severed his links with the spirit world that most children abandon at birth, his memory of that idyllic life remains strong and he yearns to return, has promised to return to his spirit companions and to leave behind his parents and the world of the living. It is this knowledge that causes his parents' sorrow. Only now, Azaro is tired of coming and going, of being born and reborn, of never staying long enough to experience life. This time he decides to stay. This time he is resolved to make his mother smile.

THE FAMISHED ROAD sets out to explode conventional ideas of naturalistic reality as it follows Azaro's adventures through a world where reality and vision blur. Endowed with special powers that lead him periodically into mischief, pursued by his spirit friends who are reluctant to let him go, Azaro persuades us to see the world through his eyes – a teeming exuberant world crowded with heroes and villains and ordinary folk, with political shysters, debtors and creditors, landlords and tenants, fathers and sons.

“The Real Deal” is an intriguing tale by @usedtobejimmy.bsky.social about a witch doctor dragged into a police operation and compelled to demonstrate his 'powers' after a governor’s disappearance. 🔗 willthisbeaproblem.co.ke/2017/04/04/t... #africansff
Excerpt from “The Real Deal” by James Kariuki published in Will This Be A Problem? The Anthology: 10th Anniversary Edition. Design is set on a textured teal background with abstract circular accents, spiral motifs and the WTBAP logo.

The excerpt text reads: Skeins of cobwebs hung from the wooden rafters of the mabati shack alongside an assortment of beads and bones on strings. The room had a solitary window that was only partially open and covered with tattered sackcloth. Thick dust motes danced in the pale sunlight that leaked through the numerous holes in the roof. Juma was alone in the room, hurriedly packing his belongings in a sports bag. His work paraphernalia littered the floor. Calabashes, animal figurines and horns were scattered all over; the contents of various bottles spilt onto the ground as he tripped over them in his rush. A promotional graphic featuring a textured teal background with elegant grey and teal curved accents in the corners. The WTBAP logo appears at the top, while the website's URL sits at the bottom. Prominently displayed in the centre is the cover of "Will This Be A Problem? The Anthology: 10th Anniversary Edition.”

In “Nonchalant,” Cheryl S. Ntumy builds a dystopian world through the intimate lens of a medicated woman and her detached partner, exposing what happens when society won’t let people be themselves. 🔗 willthisbeaproblem.co.ke/2020/04/09/n...
Excerpt from “Nonchalant” by Cheryl S. Ntumy, published in Will This Be A Problem? The Anthology: 10th Anniversary Edition. Design is set on a textured teal background with abstract circular accents, spiral motifs and the WTBAP logo.

The excerpt text reads: My face has an ashiness to it that I can’t place. The skin is smooth, creased by sleep but otherwise flawless. No spots. Not even one. Pride surges within, muffled only a little by the weakening drugs in my system. I’ll be taking another dose in a few hours and the next time I look in a mirror I’ll feel nothing. I relish this moment of dampened emotion and the flicker of anxiety that comes with it, and then the guilt sneaks in. I’m rotten. How does she stand me, useless as I am? I can’t stay one night without a fix. I have to look, I have to make sure my profile is perfect, my hair sits just so, my nightdress skims my thighs at the most flattering angle.A promotional graphic featuring a textured teal background with elegant grey and teal curved accents in the corners.
