for the first time, we find the temperature and the umbral-to-penumbral area ratio of the spots on V1298 Tau are consistent with solar, although the number of spots is VERY different! our work highlights how exoplanet transits can probe stellar photospheric properties 🔍 similar to Murray+2026!

we combine the JWST observations with contemporaneous g' and r' band observations from the Las Cumbres Observatory, giving us a global view of V1298 Tau by fixing the spots along the transit chords and fitting the light curve, we achieve a global view of the spots on this young solar analog!
two light curves of V1298 Tau spanning 20 days. The top light curve is V1298 Tau observed in g' band. The bottom light curve is V1298 Tau observed in r' band. We observed transits of V1298 Tau cdb and found... a lot of spots. like so many spots. Using fleck, we find the transits are best-fit by ~6 spots per transit chord by measuring the change in spot amplitude as a function of wavelength, we measure the umbral and penumbral temperatures of the spots!

We detected water in the atmosphere of the planet! From our retrieved water abundance, we find that V1298 Tau c has a low-metallicity atmosphere! This is consistent with other young planets and suggests that planets likely evolve to have metal-enriched atmospheres 👀
the 0.8-2.8 micron transmission spectrum of V1298 Tau c shows clear water absorption featuresmass vs atmospheric metallicity for young and mature exoplanets. the young planets are offset and have lower metallicities than the mature planets

We observed a single JWST NIRISS/SOSS transit of V1298 Tau c. During its transit, we identified SIX (!) starspot crossing events!! We tried to fit the transit using different frameworks to account for the spot crossings (masked, gaussians, fleck, or gp). Regardless of how the spots were fit...
JWST NIRISS/SOSS white light curve fit with four different methods: masking, gaussian functions for the spot crossing events, using fleck, and throwing a gaussian process at the light curve

due to the persistence of the spot, Catriona extracted the first panchromatic spot spectrum 👀 it is surprisingly (!) consistent with models, except at optical wavelengths 🤔 which highlights the importance of deriving empirical spot spectra for robust interpretation of planetary atmospheres
wavelength versus spot contrast plot and residuals. this figure shows the spot contrast from ~0.5 to 5 microns for a persistent polar spot on an M dwarf star. The temperature of the spot is ~180K colder than the photosphere. there are disagreements between the model and the data at the shortest optical wavelengths
