It would be nice to be able to pass moral judgement on the Brazilians, but here we are.

So, Don Jr. here in 2032? We really need to invest in public education. A lot. Especially with AI starting to think for everyone.

It worked! We observed a calibrator through the mask, but off the coronagraphic spot, in order to flux calibrate the system. We have transmission! We will get proper behind-the-mask observations in a few months. How exciting! We officially have another optical wavelength coronagraph in space! 🔭🪐

Images of the calibrator source through F070W, F090W, F115W, and F150W filters. These are only level 2 images, single position, not post-processed. This is what I could quickly grab.

The dataset is PUBLIC! Go have at it, if you wish.

Our first set of observations to calibrate the JWST/NIRCam coronagraph at optical wavelengths were supposed to have been executed today morning (GO 11079). How exciting! These are only for photometric calibration today, but we should get a source behind the mask soon! Co-PI: @jarron.bsky.social

The NIRCam coronagraphic mask in our lab. Clearly "see through" at optical wavelengths.

This was posted on LinkedIn. Looks like a new record, possibly 3500 proposals. Good luck everyone on the JWST roulette. We really should have made two.

I don't know if anyone else is tracking, I assume Molly is. This is from @mpudoka.bsky.social. Look like we are possibly on track to break another record.

JWST submissions. Definitely at or above Cycle 5.

Should I even be curious where the JWST proposal submission counter is at? I assume we will end up topping last year's 13x oversubscription.

Oh great. We received our SSNs 20 years ago when we arrived on student visas. Naturalized a few years ago. Who knows whether that fact is linked with our SSNs in this government database.

I had hopes for this particular CEO being at least technically smart, but it seems that every single tech billionaire is just a simpleton that got lucky. He says kids don't need to learn and understand basic arithmetics.

This is going to have some interesting unintended consequences. A large fraction of US citizens do not have passports, and I'd guess that a larger fraction of those are rural GOP voters.

The current situation in Saudi Arabia is pretty dire. The Houthis successfully targeted the east-west pipeline that supplied up to 7m barrels of oil/day to avoid the strait of Hormuz. The Houthis are rapidlt advancing on the Bab Al-Mandab strait and could block shipping traffic there soon.

Holy cow! Most international graduate students on F1 visas remain here for a few years on OPT to finish their work after graduating and end up staying in the US. This means students will just go back home. What a way to waste the ~ $1M investment that is the education of every PhD student.

Filled this whiteboard in our hallway when JWST was launched. As the 5 year long GTO project is winding down and the Riekes are retiring, the projects I am leading are all finally published. What a ride it has been and a privilege to be a part of this.

Trying to sell an old motorcycle on FB Marketplace and I've gotten like four different offers already to trade it for a gun/rifle, usually phrased as "trade for 2A?". Today someone offered an AR15. Truly disturbing how easy it is to get a lethal weapon in the U.S.

Will be doing a lab with students where they measure the solar intensity with mini solar panels. Needed a resistance board for each kit and they are quite expensive. I designed and 3D printed a simple board and pulled in resistances. Remarkably, you can get within 5% of the actual Solar value.

White plastic boards with resistances on them.

Saw the Odyssey in 70mm analog film (not IMAX). The visuals are amazing as is the storytelling. There is nothing that compares to the smooth non pixelated image of film. Since we know the story, it wasn't suspenseful, but still enjoyable.
