I can’t speak for NZ’s electoral history, but can authoritatively say that nothing like what I'm studying at present around the far-right's influence operations, coordinated messaging, & related funding (propped by billionaires) was this evident in the lead up to the 2023 general election. #nzpol

Worth remembering that if it costs the government $4.5b to reverse the gender pay tax, then it costs the women affected $4.5b to leave it in place.

An u16 social media ban on selected platforms a) won't significantly stop u16s being those platforms; Australian evidence shows this. b) will institute mass identity surveillance of all users of any age on those platforms; and c) Won't affect key sources of online safety risk (roblox, chatbots).

The take-away is "various officials and clinicians" (Health NZ) are OK with people dying of bowel cancer: they don't want more testing because that means more colonoscopies. Wut?? Fund. Properly! Gift link: www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/health-nz...

The story 'points to a gross failure of security governance on OpenAI’s behalf, not an emerging super intelligence. This is why the framing of “agent going rogue” is so problematic. It elevates and blames the technology, but excuses OpenAI’s engineering.' theconversation.com/sam-altman-s...

I agree!
dolohkov: An Old English word for library was "bochord", which literally means "book hoard", and honestly I really think we should go back to saying that because not only does it sound really cool, but it also sort of implies that librarians are dragons.

It’s the $64 billion dollar question: who the HELL is benefitting from the US war on Iran? Then there’s the military cost to Iran, and the damned cost of living every other country is suffering. Beyond angry at this profligate excess. 🤬

Winston Peters's most successful bait and switch is convincing people that he's the maverick outsider who can stick it to the man and save them from entrenched forces of evil, when, in reality, he's been in government more than anyone else this century. He's the most insidery of insiders. #nzpol

Leaderlike. My @smh cartoon.
Single frame. Albo at a desk in a dark room with “OFFICE OF AI” on door, hunched up looking at laptop, says, “How do I deal with AI?” Response in computer speech comes: “That’s a great question, Anthony! I can see you really want to do the smart thing in spite of all the risks, climate implications and likely human cost. I can help you look past those inconveniences and focus on producing optimal outcomes for my owners while making you sound responsible and leaderlike. How does that sound?”
